15 years and I just say I have my PhD in drinking and I’ve moved on
Good on you, a year and a half is epic I find that no one really cares. They are just making conversation reacting to something that’s slightly more interesting to talk about than most other things. Or they don’t quite know how to process the idea of alcoholism and they are uncomfortable. I just diffuse it and rarely get into the weeds
That’s got to be super annoying.
I know my situation is unique, but for me I am very grateful I work at a place where I could be open about my situation. Saved me from that and it’s saved me a few times when cravings were hitting. If I went to the agency in-house bar all my old co-worker drinking buddies would be like “wtf”.
I say I stopped liking the way it made me feel
I frequently say “I used to drink a lot and I stopped”. Usually shuts them up
Super inappropriate for co-workers/peers to ask you that, but, unfortunately, I think you’ll have to get used to it, not just here with co-workers, but life in general. But by and large, most people really DON’T care if you drink, only a handful of dum-dums.
I’ve had 2 bosses ask me that - after they had a few drinks of course. It’s just super annoying.
I’ve been sober for 3 years. When people ask me why I don’t drink I say, “because I’m not a drinker.” That’s usually enough to end the conversation right there
Spit in their faces
My question back - so .... and why do you drink anyway ?
