It's notoriously hard to break into PM without experience. I ended up pivoting internally, which is typically easier. Have you checked to see if there are any openings where you work currently?
Yea I had been working on internal opportunities, but they dried up during a hiring freeze last year and now they’re hiring…but looking for someone with direct experience. So now I’m looking externally
It’s not a proxy because they are looking for experience doing marketing tasks. Look for new grad roles.
You can also look for Marketing roles that are more sales enablement and make sure to highlight marketing related tasks in your job summary and work history.
Understand that outside of new grad roles, you are competing with hundreds sometimes thousands of candidates WITH marketing experience. And it’s a tough market right now.
Apply anyway to those roles, but look for opportunities within your field, including at competitors. Bringing industry and customer knowledge can be a huge help.
Also, ask your current PMM team if you can help with tasks while they look to hire. Maybe they’ll reconsider you, but at least you can have direct experience to speak about
Craft case studies showcasing how your CS work directly impacted product improvements or successful launches. Numbers talk, and these stories demonstrate your PMM worthy impact.
Agree with trying to pivot - if not within your company, then within your industry. Your understanding of the customer is your biggest advantage. Go for PMM roles that include customer advocacy, customer listening, testimonial or case study development, customer focus groups etc as responsibilities and tie them to what you’ve done as a CSM.
See if an internal transfer is possible into Marketing. Or mention to the PMM that you’re interested in becoming a PMM and would love to take on a project or two.
I got into PMM because I negotiated for the PMM title after I had applied to a Marketing Specialist role. The hiring manager and I up leveled the role. They initially offered me “Marketing Manager” title, and I asked for PMM title.
Stayed there for 3.5 years before next role.
