Your manager and coach/counselor should be fired if your utilization is low.

like

Now, it’s unlikely but usually more complex. If your utilization is low and everyone else’s is high, it means nobody really wants to give you work.. which is a separate problem.

like

If you aren’t able to be staffed on projects, repeatedly, yes

like

No. It’s on the people above you to staff you on projects. But you have to make an effort to ask to get staffed on projects. If not, you will need to fill that time with trainings.

Maybe not fired but not doing anything about low utilization will get you in trouble

^also making sure you have iron clad rationale for why you added value to the firm when not billing clients

low utilization if you are a first year is ok, happens. low utilization if you are experienced is a symptom of something you did (or lacked in doing). If you happen to get fired tomorrow, don’t fool yourself thinking this was because your low utilization; find the reason why your utilization is low - then you will have your action point to do your part trying to increase it

If there are any other performance issues low utilization will be the torpedo that sinks the ship

Any ideas to improve utilization?

One of the primary aims of the criminal justice reform movement is to help ex-convicts re-enter the workforce by sealing criminal records, and making it more difficult for employers to judge applicants based on criminal history. The idea is that people are redeemable and capable of reform. Yet the same movement thoroughly enjoys getting people fired and publicly shaming them for making arguments they find “offensive”. A rapist is capable of reform, but not someone who makes a dumb tweet. Got it.
