Yes you’re crazy. You certainly will not have more family time if you move to PwC…
Flexibility at big 4: yes
Working less at big 4: no
Big 4 will open the door for more opportunities in industry for you down the road. However, you will likely be working more as a senior at Big 4. Whatever time you'll save yourself commuting, you might spend it working.
RSM offers a “fully virtual” option, which has “limited, sporadic requirements to go to an office or client site”, but you are expected to wfh 85% of the time. You just have to apply or be hired as virtual. I’m just listing this here because RSM is a mid-tier firm as well so the hours may be more congruent with your current firm. However, I don’t know anyone who is fully virtual, so I can’t speak to the experience.
If you want more family time - B4 is probably not the way.
Idk... currently at pwc and I do have a good amount of flexibility but that comes with time and other people on my team trusting me to get work done without micromanaging. You will be coming on as an experienced hire and will not get the same flexibility upfront because no one knows you or your work ethic. And in my experience at my office, experienced hires do not perform as well as those who came straight from college in the long run. It's not true for everyone but the learning curve of new software, teams, procedures will def be a lot at first. It also will largely depend on what client you are assigned to.
I second this - Experienced hires often get the short end of the stick because they'll most likely be placed on jobs that are already suffering. Many experienced hires are often set up for failure or just fail compared to people who started as an associate. Depends extremely on what client/job you end up on. Overall I think the software methodology doesn't take too long to get used to at PwC.
Interesting. What is utilization like at big 4? I was over 100% utilized through august but have fallen off since last month. I worked on average 60 hrs during busy season. I’ve been busy all summer but haven’t worked more than 40. My current firm offers remote work but the partners in my office are old school. We do have a lot of flexibility right now but I’m getting the vibe that they don’t like that.
Yeah it probably averaged mid 70's most busy season weeks, but ramped up to more hours right before filing. You honestly get used to it, and personal life takes a complete backseat.
DM me if you’d like a referral.. I just recently came boomeranged back to big 4 after some time in industry and the learning opps and tech are incredibly worth it to me.. it just depends on what you’re looking for.. both of these other responses are accurate though!
A good question would be how many hours are you working in interim and during busy season at your current firm?
Last year tier 1 seniors got 18% bonus, but those can change year to year based on firm performance
Went from KPMG to PwC, my pay increased by 70% in the same position and have better perks/feel like I have more say in the projects I work on. Time and expected work commitment has not changed
