Yes and delayed promotions (if promotions occur at all) and there were still layoffs
RSM seems happier than the rest of us (although I haven't worked there so maybe that's just a "grass is always greener" thing) and are really ahead in Tax revenues. They are slightly ahead of the others in overall revenue, as well.
GT is a hell-hole filled with people with a chip on their shoulder re: not being Big 4, and has one of the most toxic environments I have experienced. My entire start class left within 15 months of starting. Things were really, really bad. The culture was competitive and tense. They are really ahead in Advisory revenues (by like... A lot). If I can give you any advice whatsoever, it is that GT is not worth it. Ever.
BDO is okay. well, it is kind of a mess. It has a kind of decentralized leadership structure and the people aree a mixed bag. Everyone does their own thing, for the most part, which can cause communication with the top to breakdown really quickly but makes each team have its own culture. It is still adjusting to the firms it keeps buying without figuring out its own identity. They are very slightly ahead in audit revenues.
The only experience I've had with Crowe is people leaving Crowe, so contextually it doesn't seem great and the people we've hired from there aren't always the best employees. It may just be that they are smaller and have less experience with the consulting aspects of tax, and are stronger on the compliance side. Idk
IMO, it is RSM > BDO > Crowe > GT, but I think the overall "prestige" rankings has it at GT > RSM > BDO > Crowe.
I do really like RSM and I think at least my local office culture is superior to B4 and other mid tier in my city, but thats always office dependent.
I have a million gripes about RSM too like terrible benefits, recent campus hires have been historically terrible, etc etc etc.
I'd still rather be here than any other firm in my city/state though. If I lived elsewhere I'd probably try PWC.
Culture is office dependent, so one city a firm may be known as fun and in another as cut throat.
As for which firm, they are similar at end of the day.
This is the answer. Offices are different.
Left EY and joined Crowe - best decision ever, so much more work-life balance! So I can attest that Crowe is great! I’m on East coast. I have heard RSM is trying hard to be big 4 that sometimes the hours will reflect that? Not sure how true but made since to me. Crowe is just so much smaller than RSM or BDO or GT that they can’t even try to be a big 4
I second this! I came from a small real estate accounting firm. Crowe is amazing!!! The work life balance is something I honestly only dreamed of. As one of the comments above stated, firm culture varies greatly by office so you never know what you’re going to get. I work in the NY office within the Audit and I truly love it!

Don’t go to GT, they’re horrible.
I enjoyed working at Crowe, can’t speak to the others from actual experience.
BDO is okay. Highly depends on office location.
Communication is hit and miss from top leadership. Industry and department specific leadership communication is much better. The software is meh but passable. The IT people are on top of their games though, very helpful. We get lower PTO than most other firms our size and bigger but our one week holiday in Christmas helps some.
I've heard from friends at GT that they work their employees hard and it's like they try to be Big 4 without the brand name.
I interviewed at RSM and I thought they were super nice people at least in my area. Didn't get an offer from them though.
Crowe seemed nice too when I interviewed there but I've heard a lot a lot of hit and miss stuff about their quality of work.

I like it a lot better than i liked my old firm (am at RSM was at one of the others) definitely an office by office lob by lob thing tho
 Yes there is a national culture for each, but I agree with others that the most important factor is local office or group. 
I would choose GT or BDO of those 4
I havent seen a ton of folks transition from golf apparel to public accounting, but I've heard of weirder career moves. Just kidding :).
I have worked with BDO only and I like it.
I like RSM. Sure the benefits could be better (although seniors and above now have unlimited/self managed PTO, a nice perk depending on who you ask) but I would say I’ve had a pretty good experience here with the managers and partners. Also, no pay cut for us (other than partners) so that was nice.
Rsm has very bad health insurance
Maybe I just have a bad frame of reference, but it’s better than I had in private, and it’s better than my wife’s. I’m sure there are others that are better, but I didn’t think it was all that terrible. 
High deductible, but they kick a good amount into the HSA.
