If you have a cute little furball and you’re NOT showing that thing off at every opportunity, that’s unprofessional and annoying.
1000000% this. I've found it so much easier to connect with clients by getting to share our pets with each other.

I had one client one time who mentioned my cat being in the frame in a disdainful way, because it was a distraction for him (and at the time I lived in a super tiny apartment and there was nothing I could do about it), but he was really weird! I feel like everyone generally loves a pet in the background!
One of my favorite things was a coworker who spent 10 mins of a client meeting fighting her cat for desk space. He must’ve jumped up and gotten picked up and put down like 4 times. The client was Amazon (they’re sometimes known for being a little robotic) and we were all laughing hysterically. The client was like “that’s a very furry design comp”. 🥹 I would break up with your client lol
Pets are the least of my concern on a Zoom. I can understand a pet wandering into the shot… it’s an animal and doesn’t know any better. I’m more concerned when I see an employee doing a Zoom from a hotel room and their kid is lying on the bed behind them playing video games, or their family is wandering back and forth getting ready for the pool, etc. etc.
Our department was being trained virtually on a research tool and the company’s trainer had to keep stopping to yell at their puppy for chewing on things. It was pretty disruptive and she didn’t put herself on mute while disciplining her dog. She kept apologizing for it but I felt like there had to have been a more professional way to handle it.
Unfortunately some people do care about this. I had only ever gotten positive comments before - people usually love when my cat shows up on calls. But I was recently told that there were complaints from clients at two different companies about how my cat was distracting. It’s especially weird considering I barely spoke on one of those calls - legit like 4 sentences. I am baffled, but they were both finance brands so maybe it’s a more conservative office culture. Now I’ve been told to keep my cat out of my home office for client calls. I guess if even 5% of people don’t like it, that’s enough for the policy to be “err on the side of caution.”
