Currently at a big law firm with a large labor group, and I have an offer with another large firm, but their labor group is small. They’re looking to grow the practice group, have a good culture, and are well known in other areas. Is this move a mistake for professional growth?

I would only go if there are definite opportunities for internal business development and cross selling. Given employment rate pressures I generally would not recommend going to a small group.

If clients are not using your firm for labor work, your practice might be struggling to have enough work AND be unprofitable to the firm - making it hard to make partner, have a seat at the table for big decisions etc. If your practice is small but profitable, you matter, or big but less profitable. Small and unprofitable is a bad mix for any power at the firm.

Starting a new job next month, and considering taking two days off for kids’ spring break next month. Not sure whether it’s appropriate to request time off for a new job (I would’ve preferred not to take any time off for first three months). I may just be able to just ask for a single Friday off (so 1 day rather than 2 days).

Any thoughts on whether I should proceed with the request? I just came from big law and want to make sure I’m not making a bad impression on my colleagues.

Have you ever been told off by an older attorney of color? We have one Black partner at our firm and in conversation with him this morning he told me I should work on sounding and looking "more professional" and not let my "tone" or "bad attitude" get in the way. I don't think I've ever had a bad attitude at work, and whatever "tone" I'm speaking in it's my normal one. As a Black woman I just feel super weird about it and kind of sad.
