This topic comes up frequently suggest searching the bowl. These paths aren’t like a menu for the senior manager to choose from or pick. Firm leadership steers the path and while there is input from the practitioner, in most cases it’s a one way recommendation based on track record and forward-looking metrics.
In PP candidates, most have been tracking/groomed toward that path since they were managers or even senior consultants - Building sponsorship along the way, building a book of business, having a strong network of support. Some will be recommended MD if that’s the better fit or market doesn’t warrant the need. For those late to the party, MD can be the more reliable path. Age factors into it. Risk tolerance and expectations are very different. Strong business cases are required for both.
💯
You can choose a path - whether you have enough sponsorship and support to get to PP is a different story, including demonstration that you can do it. Otherwise, sure you can be the PP route but be told you’re just better to stay as MD.
The route picks you.
There’s no real difference between Partner and Principal other than you need to be a CPA (?) to be a partner. Names and rules is all.
That wasn’t the question. But yes, one is a CPA and the other is not.
Age also plays a factor. MDs don't have forced retirement, while PPs must retire at 62.
I got the same talk as an experienced hire SM at EY like point blank said oh you're too old for Partner ha ha ha.
You can pick but whether you gets your pick is a different story
You get selected for Partner/Principal…if it were a simply a matter of a candidate’s choice there would be few reasons not to take the economic upside of being an owner.
It depends on your sponsors… that’s all
