Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

If you feel there’s a chance they underpay then sometimes it makes sense to anchor a number yourself. Otherwise if they are asking me, I turn it around and say “total comp is a function of base, bonus, and equity. It sounds like you have a range in mind to compare against, can you share that and I can at least give a gut reaction on whether it seems in the ballpark?”
Yes. It saved so many hours and interviews. Most calls end with we thanking each other for their time and part ways.
Don't provide the first number. A recruiter should tell you what they were thinking for the role, say "that seems low for this skillset and market," then give another range that's 20% above theirs.

When I was searching before coming to McKinsey I always asked for a range. Playing that dumb game around salary was so infuriating. It was super refreshing when I talked to the McKinsey recruiter and he was just like “the salary amount for this position is set at $210k. How does that sound?” There was no back and forth song and dance nonsense. I was happy with that amount and so we saved so much time.
