Does a lack of industry experience hurt your credibility as a sales engineer? I’ve noticed some people immediately dismissing claims from authors with 20 YOE since they didn’t spend a long time in industry

It's all about convenience and tonality. I joined as an SE about 1.5 years ago with literally 0 experience in tech and as an SE. It was difficult to get put to speed on IT and tech lingo and infrastructures, but what saved me was just acting confident and being honest when I didn't know the answer.

To answer your question though I do think some people discredit you, but guess what. That's on them and not you.

A great SE can sell a product they know very little about.
The front end naming conventions/industry specific stuff really is arbitrary. What matters is the underlying product capabilities.
Customer: Can product do x to handle industry business case y?
Great SE: So what you actually need is the ability to handle your data in this particular way to achieve that business outcome? Of course we can do that with the underlying system capabilities, the naming convention can be whatever you want.

I have a partner who routinely ignores emails or responds to them several weeks later. He has to approve every single document sent to the client or the court, which means you have a physically go to his office to ask him to review something. Half of the time you go to meet with him in person, he’s either on a call or otherwise busy. I find that this basically creates more work and makes meeting deadlines extremely difficult. Is this normal?

I respect the solo a lot, he’s a mentor, but I’ve got kids and I gotta get paid. Trying not to burn bridges, but I can’t wait years to get cut in. Advice?

Is it common for an SE to need to do analyst-style research for a POV/POC? This research helps guides our team of analysts in configuring the product’s environment for the POC. As an SE, I’m tasked with this research since I’m customer-facing but our analysts are not. Idea being that I can apply knowledge of the customer’s requirements.

SEs, do you have any side hustles for weekends or weeknights?
I'm in a very HCOL area and my 165k TC isn't enough to comfortably buy a million dollar house (which is a 50 y/o SFH that needs TLC on prob a 1200 living sqft).

Currently a Solutions Consultant at Pegasystems.

I am interviewing at and considering making a jump to
Oracle as a Specialist Solutions Consultant.

The reason for my move is currently at Pega SCs are treated more as AEs or Account Managers. The role at Oracle would be more of a true SC position. I also feel that Oracle will look BETTER on a resume and someone as young as me would have BETTER programs in place to train me and give me the foundation needed to be a successful SC.

Thoughts?

Recruiter for big tech company reached out on LinkedIn about a role. I asked about ballpark compensation numbers and they said they’re only comfortable sharing on a live call. Replied that I often receive LinkedIn offers for roles of paycuts around 30-50% so I want to make sure we’re in the same rough range. Recruiter again said she would only share via live call.
