Does anybody have any leads for entry level government affairs or government relations jobs for a starving political science graduate? (Not me 😬)

A lot of these jobs require multiple years of experience and for new graduate It's hard to crack into these roles without living in Washington DC it seems.

Graduate currently lives near Atlanta with plans to move to either Seattle or San Francisco. But is open to anything entry level.

Legislative aide for State Rep/Senator, or try statewide trade associations — they usually have a government relations staff

Thank you! I appreciate it!!

Are they willing to be an assistant for a year to a lobbyist or GR professional? That is usually the door into that profession, and you learn a TON doing that.

District staff for a Congressional Member is another path - it is a crappy job, to be honest, but it can be parlayed into something better after a year or two.

Most critically, I would point out that to get into GR more broadly, employers are really looking for someone who is expert in a given subject matter. For example, I work in health information technology, and virtually everyone I work with is an expert in health policy more broadly to some degree and certainly the role that technology is playing in healthcare delivery now. To be an effective government affairs professional, you have to really know a subject so that you are credible in your advocacy. Does whoever you are asking about this for have any expertise that they can pitch to someone who does GR in that space?

Hi friends of fishbowl! A year ago I told myself no more agencies. Then I got a job at another agency and I’m basically hating my life more than ever right now. This place is not good for me mentally and I’ve only been here for 90 days. I should’ve listened to my gut but here we are. So my question is what job titles should I be targeting as a senior project manager if I want to go to to client side?

Been working at my company as a new grad for almost a year, but don’t see myself in the team that I am in (working with Salesforce) for long term. Interested in frontend dev and have been learning on my own. Manager says chase doesnt have much React opportunities. Is it possible to make a switch when I barely have experience? Are there companies that will hire by seeing that I am willing to learn and am interested in frontend even tho I don’t have much experience with it yet?

Fish who have been feds,

I have been stuck deciding between two offers (both in IC, but one is more program analysis -similar to consulting work but on the fed side, and actual analysis).

The program analysis offer is at a higher GS level and a more well known agency, but is not what I’m interested in.

Does anyone have any advice on how to make a decision? Go with what I want to do, or go with the more well known agency and higher gs?

I’m curious. What would you say is the best industry / sector for…1. WLB, 2. Great people / team, 3. Exit opp’s., and 4. Overall (mix of the above). Goes without saying the obvious “it depends on office, team, project, client, etc.” So this is an ask for general observations.
