I don’t think anyone but HR sees those things, but also, who cares… I’m middle eastern and unless they have that as an option, I’ll decline to self-identify. The history of these demographics submissions is dark and unless it’s accurate to who you actually are, it’s more harmful than helpful.

Right? It’s trying to be progressive but only sees black Hispanic and Asian.
It’s definitely something some employers take into consideration… my friend is a recruiter at Meta/Facebook and there are usually dozens of people who fit the criteria for any given role, so hiring managers and recruiting managers often ask my friend “did you get any qualified applicants who would add to the diversity of our team?” or a kind of roundabout question like that. My friend will then pull out the POC, people with disabilities, etc etc to bring into the first round of interviews, based on the answers to those demographic questions. If an applicant didn’t fill out the demographic questions, my friend might make assumptions based on name, LinkedIn photo, etc., but obviously some things don’t come across in a name or a photo. So even though it’s illegal to discriminate based on those factors, if a lot of candidates are similarly well-qualified, companies that are trying to boost DEI will definitely prioritize diverse candidates. Therefore, if you CAN check any of the diversity boxes, you should. But if you can’t…not filling out that part of the application won’t do anything to hurt/help you. At least from what I’ve seen/heard.
Agree. And it’s a good way to tell if hiring decisions have been slanted towards 1 group of people while others from underrepresented groups are being passed over.
The way this industry usually works, for better or for worse, is that while someone is stressing over what precise language and qualifications and aspects to include or not include in faceless online application portal, truly thinking they have a chance at it, the job has already been promised via the must-hire system/buddy of a buddy doing the hiring.
Unfortunately I’ve noticed. As I’m trying to get to NYC and my lack of connections is killing me
Wondering this too. Would love to hear from HR/recruiters.
I doubt it plays that big a factor in the hiring process, especially the initial rounds as so much of that stuff is done via programs that scan resumes for keywords.
I would recommend using a standard resume template for exactly the reason you described. You can showcase your creativity through a portfolio but for the recruiter, easy, quick, and simple is the way to go!
An alternate view to consider: recruitment is under pressure to present more diversity to hiring managers. I as a manager am looking to really build a diverse team. It’s so hard to get there without some way to measure and have kpis. But I say that totally understanding the reluctance. As a woman I’ve always wanted to be viewed through my capability vs my gender. I think there is no easy answer. Do what you are comfortable with.
And while we’re here, why is identifying as Hispanic/Latino typically asked as a separate question? If they know we can be mixed, why not make the whole question multiple-choice?
People have biases. Got overlooked because I didn’t fit the cultural fit. Names, gender, outside activities, and social economical class all play a part.
Should not affect the hiring decision at all. It’s meant to be aggregated in overall stats. I dont believe anyone outside of HR can view your individual response.
No, I don't think it looks bad, even to HR. Those questions are only there to collect data on the demographic of employees applying and getting hired. If you feel uncomfortable or would rather select decline it shouldn't affect the hiring decision at all unless the hiring process was already racially motivated.
Nah. It really doesn't matter. I don't think anyone pays attention to it so much to be honest.
They want to know for a reason. Hate this question.
I hate that question. Never had to self identify until I came to the U.S.
