No I just also turn my camera off
I will moving forward. It’s so weird
No, it's called a phone call... not a novel concept, I don't need to see the face of everyone I'm talking to

SD1 you didn't read the thread did you? "Phone call" doesn't require use of a cell phone. Use teams, zoom, slack, meets, whatever your platform of choice - treat it like a regular ass call. Why is this concept so hard to grasp.
Have grace and extend benefit of doubt to your colleagues. It’s been a hell of a couple years. We don’t know what’s driving choices like on/off camera.
Maybe their “home office” is in the laundry room or a messy bedroom.
Maybe they feel like crap b/c they gained 20 lbs and tried to cut in their own bangs.
Maybe they are on back to back calls all day and are exhausted from that constant “on camera” added pressure and yours is the one call they shut it off for.
Maybe they are breastfeeding.
Maybe they are in the car.
Extend grace.
extend benefit of doubt.
if you “assume”, assume the best.
Hallelujah!! More of this!!
Yes, I will ask people to turn them on so we can have an engaged conversation.
I don't think a camera is necessary for an engaged interaction. It's very different from a face to face and can make people more self conscious and be distracted. Bc lots of time you end up catching glances of what YOUR camera is seeing and being hyper aware of your appearance/expressions.
I leave mine off unless it’s imperative to have face to face. I find looking at myself is distracting it’s like taking a mirror with you 😀
There’s an option to remove your self video in zoom for that purpose.
I kinda view leaving video on as an old person thing. As in to older ppl there is a distinct difference between a phone call versus zoom but for younger ppl it's just a new platform with a lot more tools (better calendar management, audio, video, shreen share, control other person's screen... Etc)
I have only once had a manager who wouldn't let us use our laptops for note taking during a meeting. He didn't make it through his probation and was fired 6 months in.
Considering that technology is also an accommodation tool, requiring them off, or requiring that people take notes in other ways also risks furthering ableism.
Though, I'm generally very anti-meeting in the first place. If people ran meetings well (and only after exploring other avenues before calling a meeting), there would be much less of an issue with all of this.
My high performing teams work largely asynchronously. Meetings are rare (I personally have only 3 or 4 a week, and those are scheduled by people who enjoy meetings and don't know how to work any other way. So much time wasted talking about golf.)
I’ll do you one better. I had an interview last week, 1 on 1 with a director. She didn’t turn her camera on. Most awkward experience of my life.
I had a similar experience while interviewing for my current role. I scored the job, and that person lost theirs.
We use teams and I like the features to store chat history, file sharing etc. I’ll usually start out with my camera on then turn it off after someone starts presenting. I also hide everyone else so I can’t see their faces - it just gets distracting for my ADHD brain to look at faces and not be able to focus on the content of the conversation. It also depends on the type of meeting 1:1 I’ll be on camera
This is pretty much my method (also have ADHD). 1:1 I’m always on camera, but if it’s a big meeting with someone else presenting I’ll be visible at first, then turn it off so I can focus
I might be the weird one, but I’ll leave my camera in even if the other person has theirs off
Hey, I am weird right along with you. Why use the plant form if we aren’t it fully using it? It’s easy to juMp on a call.
When lockdown started my company was mandatory camera on for meetings, and I kind of got used to it. I like to read facial reactions it helps me feel more connected with 1:1 or very small groups. But if the other person has theirs off, fine with me I’ll just shop the saks sale section while we have this convo
No I am usually always came off. I just use zoom invites because they are easier to make on our system.
For me and everyone else, we only turn on cameras when in client meetings or introductory meetings for a new person on the team. Having the cameras off allows for everyone to not have to be seen every second, whether someone is eating breakfast while listening to a meeting, or not having to be “dressed for work.” Overall, gives a very comfortable vibe and everyone is still super productive despite that.
I’m the other person with the camera off. I feel like everyone should default to camera off depending on the context of the meeting. If the other person or majority have it on you should turn it on. But then again depends on basis for meeting.
It's exhausting to have multiple on-camera meetings! I have no issue offering someone a break from being on camera (or taking that break myseld when offered)
I prefer to have my camera on so people can see my facial expressions and see that I’m actively engaged in our conversation. I fully understand others don’t have the same idea and I don’t get offended when they have their cameras off. I do prefer to have them on if it’s a 1:1 with leadership or an introductory call.
I look at it as replacing an interaction that would have occurred at the office, face to face. Even if you’re presenting, you’re seen.
Also, it’s respectful - shows you’re engaged and mindful of your colleagues.
When I used to work in the office, I always used to think that turning the camera on should be the norm. Now I started working from home along with 90% of our company and here everyone keeps their camera off during calls.
Even during one on one meetings, the other person keeps the camera off. I usually turn mine on at least for one of the one meetings.
The best part was that during a virtual town hall, HR director asked everyone to open their cameras before the CEO joins. Only 10% of the employees complied. CEO joined and requested to open cameras and only another 10% attendees did that. He just gave up and continued nwith the meeting.
I always blur my background as my room is not pretty to look at.
I see zoom as a computer version of a phone tbh. We have teams but most of our team prefers the screen sharing capabilities of zoom and the company has both so why not use it instead. I feel like it's an old people thing to expect zoom to have the camera on, or at least from what I've noticed from coworkers. I only turn mine on in team building events or like when we do one on ones for evaluations
Generally, I only turn my camera on for 1:1s or if everyone else has their camera on. If it’s a 1:1 and the other person is camera-off for any reason I just turn mine off too. I don’t think it’s awkward, it just makes it more akin to a phone call. I prefer Zoom, Webex, etc. to an actual phone call because 1) I can join from my computer and cell service isn’t a factor, 2) we have the option to screen share, 3) I don’t have a work phone, just my personal cell, so I prefer to limit how much that number is distributed and how often I use it for work, 4) it’s easy to add to a meeting invitation, and 5) people can join when they’re ready, vs trying to time when to call if someone’s in back-to-back meetings
I’m ok with that. If it’s just me on camera I’ll usually turn my off too.
Many companies don’t provide work cell phones anymore so I completely get not wanting to hand out your personal cell number to work people for a regular old phone call.
Easy enough to turn camera on/off based on comfort. . Plus you get to easily share files, notes, chat etc.
I agree it can be mentally exhausting to be on camera all day. It’s more intimate and “ up close” then you’d be even in a in person meeting you don’t sit 18” apart face to face at a conference table.
