Seems to me it might infringe on freedom of association, at least for private universities. They have reasons for preferring legacies that have nothing to do with race or any other protected group. It encourages more active and contributing alumni networks. If your alma mater turns down your kid, of course you are going to be less likely to donate.
I’m glad Lori and Felicity and all the rest got caught and I hope they see jail time. That was just flat out fraud.
Yes 100%! They’re the real ones stealing spots from more deserving people 🤷🏾♀️
It amazes me that yanks accuse the UK of being snooty and class-based when university openly advertise that you can buy your way in.
Capitalism gone too far: if they Ivy League wants to promote excellence then it should admit on merit alone. Affirmative action works, although there are some sketchy statistics around how they are clearly working against Asian Americans who are also a minority, but are held back from their desired places at the top schools.
C1: I think you answered your own question there. The overall proportion is not the issue, it is the likelihood of admission given the number of applicants and their level of qualification. You are analysing the wrong population. It’s not the whole pop, it’s the subset who are applying to top schools and who have competitive grades.
Asian American (so let’s be clear, fully American students, with Asian heritage: this isn’t a point about international students) typically have much better applications than other groups, yet they number of places they get so not reflect this.
Basically, when they apply, with typically better grades than white and black people, Asian Americans are less likely to get in. Given how many of them apply, and how good their grades are, there should be more of them. Apparently the schools mark them down hugely on social factors so it looks like they just suck but it’s clearly just a means to reduce the number.
If they don’t the whole school to become Asian American then they should just say so, rather than giving one societal group different treatment over another without explaining why.
Yeah, ok, so I was a legacy candidate to my dads school, I still didn’t get in because of grades. Don’t forget that these kids still have to be within reasonable qualification
They usually go hand and hand. Your dad unfortunately just didn’t think you were worth paying for no offense. I’m sure if your dad would’ve donated the right amount of money, you would’ve stolen a seat from a more deserving student.
Dislike this. Nothing wrong with fostering a culture of tradition. I am not a legacy anywhere of note.
Yes, please.
What do people think of auctioning college seats? Say 10 seats go to the highest bidders, use that money for financial aid
