Mine was $1k (laid off in Nov 2024) which I paid for 5 months before someone told me to check if I qualified for Medicaid; I checked and I did qualify. Medicaid coverage in NYS is great and free! I don’t understand why companies don’t tell you to check when they lay you off, since they don’t make money on COBRA, but then again, most agencies are assholes so.
Medicaid is great if you don’t have serious medical issues. Many specialists don’t take it.

Healthcare monthly payments through COBRA are more expensive than getting it yourself, BUT the coverage tends to be better.
We have 2 kids so our monthly Cobra is $2350. I could get it $400/ month cheaper by going directly through BCBS NY, but due to one of our children’s medical needs, the coverage we have through Cobra is better and $200 cheaper/ month than the same coverage (which my son would need) if we went directly through BCBS.
If you’re single and healthy though, definitely ditch Cobra and go directly through a health insurance company.
Laid off at the beginning of this month. Would be 1250 for me and my kid. Thank god wife still employed and we can (fingers crossed) all be on her plan.
You would be able to get on your wife’s plan via the change in status clause in policies. I would call the insurer and check this out. HR/benefits managers are sometimes none too helpful.
$900/mo currently - just me on plan in NYC.
Single, medical/dental/vision, roughly $800 in Illinois.
Around $700.
$500/month, which my company actually paid for for 2 months as part of my severance package and I was able to negotiate an extra month
The Obamacare market place will subsidize you with decent insurance until you get new employment. I did it for two months before getting a new gig. If you get decent paying employment within the same year, you may need to pay some back, but that’s a good thing… cause you’re employed.
I paid for COBRA for 18 months. Then got a better plan on the healthcare.gov marketplace for less. Using 20/20 hindsight, I realize I should’ve checked the marketplace sooner. The first was $800 a month, the better plan was $600.
Mine was $600-ish for just me. $1200 for me and my wife. A much crappier plan at healthcare.gov would’ve cost a little over $500.
I gambled a bit and waited the 60 days allotted by COBRA to choose to take it or not… ultimately I went with the healthcare.gov plan because while I was unemployed it cost me like $25 a month. Finally, I got a new job and the insurance started on day one. So I cancelled it before I started earning new money.
But if you have significant healthcare needs, you have to weigh carefully what the healthcare.gov that ensures you’ll have what you need for your issues, would cost you. Since it’s so close to the end of the year, it’s gonna be pretty hard to meet any deductibles.
