Just here to say that 120hrs/week is entirely unreasonable. Is your counselor / partner in your group aware of this / have you reached out for help? They should be stepping in here to help figure out what is going on. Take care of yourself!
I agree, that's why I'm really skeptical going through another busy season... The partners know and I've talked with them about it and their response was 'that's not sustainable' and 'thanks for all your hard work, we know it was rough' and that's about it. Not much has been done currently to address the situation in our office/teams since the end of last busy season which worries me what the same thing is going to happen
I moved into IRS
AMAZING work life balance!
Culture is great + I have more time to focus on personal growth.
Same here. Same pay amount as a senior at PwC, better health benefits for the fam. WFH as needed and after probation it’s 50/50 wfh or office. I don’t care what anyone says, it’s not going away. The union already has it in the bargaining agreement. Oh ya, a good union. I’ve been in a few, they’re one of the better ones.
120+ hours per week? lol there’s no way that’s true. Yes you should go to a tax accounting role in industry and see how you like it. If you don’t like it, you could easily go back to public accounting.
I had the same story. I was doing 100+ weeks at big4 and got the same thank you and we have nothing we can change except possibly give you more clients. Smaller firms are more manageable but need better organization skills due to large number of clients. Also you will have less technical support and shorter timelines as others have mentioned. It is still tiring tbh but it is rarer to be doing 100+ hours. There is also a big strain right now in accounting so firms are running extra thin. Figure out what you want long term. 9-5 definitely doesn’t exist in public and it is still rare in private. Also figure out how much money you need
What type of work are you doing?
Tax accounting for private companies with a mix of everything (partnerships, corps, trusts, individuals).
Give OP a break - you get the message. 120 hours or not.
They’re just a fellow overworked colleague in the accounting world needing support about other opportunities.
Good workers don’t get paid more, they get more work! Hang in there OP.
THERE ARE OTHER OPTIONS! 💖
Unless you work in financial services, you generally won’t work 120 hour weeks at mid-size. Maybe 60-70 max. Either way, stay at B4, make manager at B4 and then leave.
I’ve been at both. Went back to smaller. Better work life balance and less stress of constant admin duties and unrealistic goals. You can find one that is more family friendly.
I'd like to echo those saying they work at the IRS. It'll almost never be more than 40 week in and week out. Depending on your location they're still hiring heavily and aggressively. I have 2 YOE in tax and they offered me GS-13 which was a huge raise plus a 20k hiring incentive bonus. A year away from manager they'd hire you instantly and possibly give you hire than step 1. Pension is great as well and the gov benefits are extremely solid. Worth looking into at the very least.
A1, yes tips galore! I utilized reddit a bunch tbh despite the crap you’ll find on social media, the sub for getting any government jobs “r/usajobs” is extremely helpful for navigating the website where the applications are and extremely informative when trying to ask niche questions. Someone has similar experience if you’ve experienced some sort of dilemma. The easiest way to get a job is to attend a “hiring event.” The IRS does them mostly but I imagine other agencies have them as well. They’re hosted by the IRS and have employees talk about the work they do, the benefits, and then they go into the specifics of each division and what you’d work on. At the end they give you a direct email to send your resume to. That puts your resume in front of a hiring manager immediately and then you’ll be able to get to an interview much faster. as for resume there is a template on the IRS website I believe if not you can google “federal agency resume template” and there’s a few agencies that have it listed. If you apply thru a specific job app link on the USAJOBS.gov website and you DON’T format your resume like that, your app will almost immediately be thrown away. I‘m not sure if they us AI but every employee and anyone in HR will tell you if you don’t format the resume they don’t bother looking at it. Aside from that the interview is very technical, but the pay is great at least it seems that way for me (2nd year associate that saw 1%-3% raises and no bonuses across entire firm). so I’d say if you’re applying, choose as many different cities/states as your able when picking a job location to make it more likely you get an offer.
120+ hours a week sometimes…
Exaggerate much?
And how are you a year away from manager as a senior associate?
17 hours/day, 7 days /week. Not bloody likely!!
Whatever you do, set clear expectations on schedule. You could walk into MP’s office today and say 70 a week max and they would make the magic happen
Industry is better but not too small companies if you are worried being bored
You complain about 120 + workweek, and also worry about being bored in industry. You drank the Kool-Aid and ask for seconds. Can't feel bad for people like you
