Don't mention you got laid off
I'm guessing the recruiters are hitting up folks from EY because they know about the recent layoffs. No need to bring it up directly, but I'm willing to bet the recruiter will bring it up in a roundabout way.
Don't mention it at all. It does not matter and it may affect how they negotiate. They assume he is desperate or got laid off cause he is a 2 or a weak 3 who knows.
OP: Deloitte knew I was laid off and still wanted to meet in person, that conversation happened about a week after layoff. But with KPMG the lay off was brought up by me over the phone and caught recruiter by surprise. I actually got more than one offer down the road - didn't wait for Deloitte because it takes too long to turn around and I needed a job & lawyer by end of month otherwise I get deported 😂
What should he say? Because they'll think he is still working at EY. He just got laid off few weeks ago.
He can talk about EY without saying I got laid off.
Without lying
I guess if the recruiter brings it up he can't lie and has to say the truth. But if the recruiter does not bring it up and continues with the interview process I'm just wondering if he is obligated to bring it up at all? EY said they will not mention that he was laid off and nor will his referrals.
Thanks EY2 that helps. So I guess it just depends on the recruiters since deloitte didn't mind it buy KPMG did. The 2 offers were from BDO and deloitte?
I've been laid off twice in my career and I've been honest during interviews. Most recruiters know that layoffs, especially mass layoffs are more about the company than the individual. If the recruiter loses interest, then that's not the place to be. Every firm has had layoffs at one time or another. I've never run across a company that became disinterested because I had been laid off. In fact, at one point, I had multiple offers to choose from after 2 layoffs and a short stint at the place I was at.
Multiple offers from big4 or industry? I feel industry is more chill with layoffs than big4.
Be honest... There's no shame in it at all. It's common knowledge that there are layoffs happening across the board, and they will find out anyways
So if he doesn't mention it and later in the interview process they find out.. would that create a problem? Because in his resume he has put December 2016 for end date (rather than present). So they might assume he's still working at ey.
No he was referred to by his cousin whose a director at pwc. So pwc scheduled a call with him to understand his goals and interest.
I was laid off and had a phone interview with kpmg. Recruiter got disinterested the second I mentioned layoff (to the question "why are you leaving EY and joining us right before busy season?); but I couldn't lie because they will find out eventually. BUT I talked to kpmg the week of layoff so maybe it wasn't wide spread yet back then (pretty sure I caught recruiter by surprise). Hopefully people have made peace with it so your friend might have a better chance than I did. I got interviews with Deloitte too, but that's taking too long to happen. Ended up with BDO. Good luck to your friend!
EY2: Did this happen recently with you? So recruiters do show disinterest if the person is laid off. During your interview with deloitte did you mention you got laid off? Did they show disinterest or gave you an offer too late?
OP: i was desperate so I sent my resume to literally everything if that answers your question lol
Dont tell u got layoff just to be safe. There is no way the recruiter will find out if you got layoff due to performance or whatever reason for the layoff. Just say that you love the work but got a shitty team and manager that didn't care about you and didn't appreacite your hard work. U got put on a job where coaching was limited. The firm is shit because your best friend got laid off. And the firm culture is also shit. U love audit so u are just trying to find a culture that fits.
In my experience, they usually focus on skills learned. There's always the why are you looking at us or leaving them. Can always choose how you answer that by saying why them. If asked flat out, probably not the place for you because they're trying to take advantage of the layoffs. Don't lie but usually you're not asked.
