Got an offer from a mid size firm - 30% increase on my base and went to my director who I work with and is like a mentor to me - we talked it through and my decision made sense to him and he even wished me luck and was at peace with my decision and was about to put in my two week notices but I guess he went to tell the partner charge and I got calls from a bunch of partner to understand what my needs where apart from salary - they addressed my concerns and gave me a 35% increase effective immediately. Got to say it was a total surprise to me too but worked out for me so I say at least let your director know as he/she might understand you the most then see if matching is possible since you like working with them. True that my director didn’t have a say in the salary decision but him backing me up was a big part of all this as he is highly respected.

Well talk to a partner, if you’re hoping the firm matches
Talk to the partner. If you stay, the less people that know, the better. It’s really a loyalty thing. The partner may bring in the director for retention purposes.
I agree, straight for the partner and say what you said here. Hopefully the raise is substantial?
If you are a manager your RL should be a partner so should talk to them. RLs are in the CRT and comp discussions. A director would have no influence for a manager salary.
How I imagine the conversation will go:
You -> I like working with you and I’ve learned a lot from you. I would like to continue working with you. However, just got this offer for 20% more money. That’s a lot of money and can really help me out financially. I am thinking about taking it.
Director -> I’m happy for you. If you want to go I totally understand, that is a material amount of money. I like working with you and the teams like working with you. Is this anything other than the money? If not, maybe we should talk to the partner and try to match the offer. Lets set up a meeting with the partner for later today so we can all talk this out together.
