Crossroads Toyota Motor Sales, USA, Inc. I have been with the organization almost 6 years and have accomplished achievement of my MSL (Masters Strategic Leadership) and LOVE the organization…BUT…I am not having any success in moving into a new position…my interviews are great experiences but it seems to be a pattern of not being selected yet encouraged to continue applying…received information from a mentor/manager to ask for candid feedback…when is enough…ENOUGH??

Alas, I don't qualify.

That means get a pidgeotto haircut and more tattoos.
You can’t let an off-the-cuff comment shake you. My approach is...if you like my work and like my vibe in person, good...you qualify to employ me. If you don’t dig my work or like my vibe, thanks for letting me know you’re not qualified. You seem driven, you probably have high standards for yourself, and you’ll most likely find a good creative opportunity soon. Feed your determination and starve self-doubt.
Fuck that CD. Creative wildness takes time to mold and grow. That’s such a vague rejection. There’s def better agencies and teams out there so don’t let that response get you down.
Took me 3 rejections before I landed my spot. I am by no means a classic AD. I don’t fit the mold at all. But companies that are looking to the future are hiring people like you and me. So keep your head up and keep applying!
Your book was good enough to land you an interview and that’s what’s important. You’ll end up somewhere that appreciates your work and you exactly as is
Creative wildness is not what drives business, creative focus, impeccable execution and strategically sound decisions do... Sounds like the CD was a douchebag. It happens...
CD sounds like a tool and his vague interview feedback would be vague creative feedback on the reg
... I take that comment to basically mean I’m not a good designer/AD in this ridiculous design language some creatives speak.
I do SO many things outside the box but I don’t fit this mold of a particular designer... that I’d like to but won’t get the chance to without getting a job at a place like this (this would be a lot easier to understand if I could mention names but take my word for it).
Anyway, feel like crap, been rejected a lot this year and wondering if should even bother doing this any more after eight years.
It was literally one person’s opinion, and they don’t know you. Try not to take it too hard. I let a few criticisms like that hold me back for years and I wish I hadn’t.
I’m not 100% sure what creative wildness means, but some of the best creatives I’ve met are straight-laced, clean-cut family people. I happen to have to half sleeves of tattoos but I dress conservatively and lead a very boring life. I don’t care how you dress or whether you seem “creative.” I’m only interested in your work. Sounds like you’ve got the chops. That isn’t a place you’d want to work.
Subscribed. The angst feels relevant.
Thanks everybody. Been rejected a lot this year and it’s taking a toll.
For perspective, always remember that the interviewer will be meeting with multiple candidates. Sometimes, many. At some point, someone will just feel right—they’ll be THE ONE. The person doing the hiring is not going to put a lot of energy into explaining “why” to all of the people NOT selected. A good way to look at it is this: It’s not that you were rejected, it’s just that someone else was hired.
Just to add, and I really believe this: sometimes you just click with people. Sometimes people just enjoy your sense of humour and your thoughts. Find a CD like that. Find one that hires you for your favorite piece in your portfolio. The person you interviewed with was not it. Don't get down on yourself, find your people.
