I was going to come clean years ago and saw HR’s eyes widen. I decided it’s like a felony on your record, who knows what they eye rolls are behind one’s back. It’s not fair but stigma is nuts and not worth it. I said instead that I hadn’t been sleeping well and it was affecting my work. They gave me a few extra days off. My belief is that if one is so sick that one can’t perform then meds and Drs are a priority even if it means resigning. In a perfect world it’s nice to keep the job while you sort it out with therapy and meds or whatever works. But again, depends how depressed you are and sometimes balancing that is too hard. Do you feel like you’re keeping things at bay or treading water and about to drown?
I’m sorry to hear! Feel free to inbox me, 15 years of therapy under my belt and all the trimmings.
Yes. I felt it was very clear that I was being penalized for being depressed (being uninvited from important meetings, decreased access to CEO, etc.). So I wanted it to be official, in writing, that I had informed the agency of my depression diagnosis, so they would be aware that it wasn't just a "bad attitude" (their favorite accusation). HR was okay about it. My supervisors and above did not change their behavior though. It seems there are two distinct camps: those of us who really understand what depression is all about, and those who think it's nothing but drama. Too many managers are in that second camp.
