Reality isn’t sweet buttercup. If it’s your first year and you were consistently raising your hand to ask for work then it shouldn’t be an issue.
Once you advance in your career you'll learn how important politics are. Build relationships. Go out to lunch with a manager you worked with etc. If they like you, theyll schedule you. It isnt just about your work.
Utilization is a big deal. I’ve seen it as justification for letting people go. My question is why don’t you have utilization? It is because managers and partners are not assigning work? If that is the case, there is probably either real or perceived underlying performance issue. If people don’t want you working on their engagements, I would most certainly brush up the resume. If you are performing well, make sure you are vocal about your availability and actively look for projects.
So it’s OPs fault for waiting to be assigned to a project?
It’s your own responsibility to take charge of your career. If anyone is low on work, they should be reaching out and asking for more assignments not just sitting around waiting for someone to reach out with an assignment regardless of if they’re a new staff or experienced senior.
Wow you're sweet lol. It's my first year and sometimes they didn't have work for me to do so I'm a little nervous about it
Then ask them if they know someone who does, OP. Don't give anyone a reason to believe you aren't committed to earning the firm more money, and your name won't be on the lips of people discussing who needs to go if times get tight.
It has to be like really low to raise a red flag. Like bad enough where people don’t want you on the engagement
Like KPMG 1 said, it’s the reason behind it that matters. For example if you are new and just didn’t know that you couldve reached out to helpother engagements, then I think it’s fine and if that’s the case it’s more on the scheduler than on you. But if you have a low utilization because you are unwillingly don’t put in your hours or no teams want you to be on their engagements, then I think that would warrant some sort of performance related conversations.

Utilization doesn’t matter one bit in audit.
I’m sorry OP. The whole WFH cluelessness situation for people joining during pandemic is less than ideal. My suggestion will be to find something billable as soon as possible and try to get rave reviews on that one. Recensy effect might beat the potential axe.
Sure, come down to Deloitte; but be sure to actively look for projects here.
I have personally not seen someone get laid off for not having enough billable hours as an A/SA. Either leadership attempts to help connect you to a project or you’re coached out because no one wants to work with you.
It is possible but less likely these days with the remote environment. In theory you could be under utilized because your group lost a client and now doesnt need as many people as it once did or the existing teams dont need someone at your staff level. If you speak up and say hey this year i was under utilized and are willing to work remotely, you may be staffed on a job in another city that no one thought to give you.

In advisory if you’re not working you aren’t making the firm money. Fixed fees in audit may be different where they know you can be pulled to a busy season. Otherwise I get worried on the bench
Not big 4 experience but yes I’ve seen people get laid off for not having enough billable hours. If the entire team is close, meeting, or exceeding their hours, and your really low, there is a problem. Also, if there is a lot of people with low hours multiple people may be let go because there is not enough work to go around. This is not something I’ve seen the last couple of years. People have been let go because they just aren’t getting it not necessarily because they’re low on hours.
The reality is that low billable hours are often a symptom of not being a "preferred resource" - or, to be more blunt, are often the result of being in the lower part of your class.
Yes. 2 people I know at PwC were let go. Another people quit after bouncing around different groups. But it was back in 2020.
yes, that is why we have Utilization in our metrics and why we are rated on them. Meaning, if we re not working on client work, we need to be asking other teams if we can help them out.
