My first year I took WAY too many friends and family and now it is a pain. Some are cool, but some are broke and are high maintenance, especially if they live out of state. I recently decided that I will only take out of state clients if the account is 250K or more. I must admit, I would take 800K in a heartbeat, habit or no habit.
I have a few of these as well, but only 1 is a client. He is a "know it all" so I sold him strictly on the value of muni's in his situation and he basically manages his own IRA (badly) and I do the non-qualified. I know that doesn't answer your question. Take it and tell him to leave you alone. These types like a direct approach.
I say take it. 800k is a nice account. Just let him know that you will run the money, and if he does not like it, tell him you will fire his ass.
What are the bad habits?
I would encourage him to split it up something like $600/$200 and let him trade the $200. Perhaps it won’t be such a time sucker then.
Some bad habits are subjective and sometimes cultural. What you perceive to be a bad habit may not be to others. If he is a money launderer, stay away. If he gambles, manage his money and help him with his problem. Most times our biggest value to clients is not the actual investment part. If he refuses to take your advice or continues with the habits you do seem to be bad, perhaps he shouldn't be a friend and he can move his account.
