McKinsey & Company I am entering in the interview rounds with McKinsey and wondering if anyone had tips, online course advices or materials to share!
Also would anyone be interested or knows anyone to do a coaching session that has already worked in Mckinsey? Thanks! McKinsey & Company @

My guess you would come in at manager, not senior manager. Coming from industry, you likely have lots of valuable skills and talent. But senior manager requires experience with engaging clients as a consultant, selling, forming and leading teams, building proposals / responses, and writing SOW. Those are very consulting specific skills.
The levels have a very large overlap in pay band. It's larger than what people think. The top of senior manager is about triple the bottom of manager. But there are several managers that make significantly more than many senior managers. Coming from industry, don't get hung up on level or title or which group you work in. I've worked on projects with many other groups than my home. Your skills will drive what you get to do. Just get a pay rate you are happy with and get on board.
Regarding your final interview, I would say be energetic and enthusiastic, yet relaxed. Make sure you look awake and ready to be in front of clients.
Overall, you will likely work more than 40 hours a week most of the time. But you will also have lots of perks and down time and flexibility. The main perk is of course getting paid like a consultant.
Great, thanks so much!
My position has yet to be defined. I was given an MD referral for the Tech Strategy group but given my background in energy, I was passed over to the energy strategy/industry X group. The recruiter mentioned the role could be Mgr or Sr Mgr, and the first MD I spoke with mentioned they were still debating the level, but likely Manager. No complaints from me since I’m coming from industry. Hoping to get clarification about the following:
- can anyone shed some insight about the work in Industry X? (Dw I have done my research but would be great to get someone’s input here)
- is the ambiguity in the level I’d be joining normal? Can someone clarify the difference between responsibilities for Mgr and Sr Mgr. I plan to ask this during my closing, but unfortunately my previous two conversations didn’t leave much time to answer this.
- I have reviewed the compensation for Mgr and Sr Mgr through research, but wanted to get some insight on whether those numbers are accurate or if they are industry specific.
- I know Accenture laid off several industry X folks, but now that things are picking up that they (like everyone else) is hiring like crazy; any thoughts on stability within industry X vs elsewhere?
-TBH as much as I enjoy the energy industry my real goal is to get into financial services/m&a. Is it easy to move around once you’re in?
-If I come in as Mgr or Sr Mgr what can I expect in terms of hours? I know the lifestyle and I’ve been gunning for this since my MBA but just to get some real life feedback would be great.
My background:
BS Chemical Engeering,
MS Petroleum Engineering
MBA
YOE: 7
I’m Industry X specializing in energy and up for SM. We are a small group so my answers will out me, but if you DM me, I can answer any questions you have.
We did cutting back at the SM+ level last year, but that was mostly because we were very top heavy pre-pandemic, COVID was a good reason to restructure and focus on bringing in new talent. As such, we have been focusing on bringing in C/M and have a huge backlog.
Hopefully you join the team soon!
Thanks! Just sent a DM.
OP, did u end up taking the job?
I sure did!
