We didn't have one for any of the 3 kids. I'm not sure if I missed something, but it was fine without. Probably depends on the hospital you're going to.
It’s a luxury, but definitely comforting for all involved - especially if this is your first and/or it’s a long or complicated labor.
My first had some complications during delivery and it was helpful to have her explain to us what was going on while the doctors were focused on the baby. My second was a long delivery and the doula allowed me to have moments of relaxation/short naps knowing there was someone at my wife’s side when she needed it. The doula can also help your wife with aftercare guidance.
Given COVID regulations, you’ll probably want to clear that the doula will be allowed in with you in the delivery area. And with the doula that they meet the hospital or birth center’s regulations (e.g. vaxed)
I would highly recommend getting one. We did not have one for our first, and my wife and I both felt like we weren’t heard and it was really chaotic. Having a doula for the next time - My wife felt really well supported and it overall felt much more calm and positive.
Best decision ever!
Didn’t get a doula so it’s hard to say either way. My wife and I did a lot of research beforehand on births and had a delivery that was free of complications. I don’t know what benefits a doula would have been in our case. Our nursing team was also incredible, which made the process that much easier.
My wife had one and it was nice to have someone familiar with the process to explain things, ask the nurses the right questions, and as others said look out for you and mom through it all. My wife had an uncomplicated, natural birth that happened very quickly, so the exercises and comfort the doula provided was very helpful. She also noticed a piece of placenta that was missing that even the doctor missed, catching a potentially serious issue.
If your wife is considering a natural birth I think it's a no-brainer. If she will be on an epidural there may be little the doula can do since mom will be pretty immobile.
We had a doula all 3 times. Worth it to reduce the stress all round
How much does getting a Doula cost? Are they covered by insurance?
Highly variable by location I would guess. In greater NYC area we paid ~$1000 and it was an out of pocket expense
