Personally, I have a team member who has a business degree but they work solely on data analysis and delivery of data, so i know that a comp sci degree isn't necessary (and no bootcamp or anything like that).
All the real coding experience that I've learned and actually utilized (SQL, python, building react apps, general web development) is all from self teaching. You can 100% learn just using things like Udemy.
That being said, I'm not sure what the hireability would be. In a perfect world, it would be great to just learn from something like Udemy, build a few nice apps and add them to a portfolio that you can show prospective employers. I just don't necessarily know what employers go for that.
In essence, a bootcamp is partly a scam because you can learn basically everything you would actually need without it. But on the other hand, employers like certifications and degrees, it seems.
Yeah, I don't mean that they are all useless, just like not all college degrees are useless. Without either of those makes it harder for sure. But they also cost a lot of investment.
I would recommend going through Career Karma. They do a really good job of giving you the tool you need to determine what path would be good for you.
That being said though, there are a TON of resources out there if you want to learn yourself, but sometimes it's nice to have more people to ask questions and provide structure.
Try to free track on Codecademy for a little and see if you like it or not. I also have more free resources if you need some, message me.
PS Boot camp grad. I had a really great experience, but it was a small local camp.
