Hi everybody, I’m new to the bowl and I’m excited to connect with you all.
I'm a senior networking engineer at a major tech company looking to move towards a team leadership or management role. Do you have any tips on how to approach my career plan so I can make this transition in the short term (within 3 years)? How can I effectively communicate my career goals to management? Any other recommendations, like courses to take or books to read, would also be appreciated.

Engage your manager and HR partner to discuss your ambitions - understand what it is that makes management something you want and discuss with them what you need to do to make the next step forward. Ask about training and education opportunities that your company may provide internally or support externally. Be reasonable in your expectations and listen to the feedback - make sure you’re asking questions and listening more than you speak.

1) Find a mentor in that role and start learning what they did

2) Re: communicating to management: Ask mentor about this next piece of advice first because I don’t know your company/sub industry and there may be nuances but in general, you would meet with your manager, say my goals are x, y, z what can I do to get there in this amount of time?

Establish key performance indicators & milestones.

Network like crazy within the organization to make yourself known (humbly, without being arrogant, insincere or grandiose).

Get lots and lots of feedback along the way

I've become really jaded about consulting. I find all so often you need to tell the client what they want to hear to keep their business and I feel like so much of the what I recommend doesn't actually get implemented. I'm looking to make a career switch so I can both create and execute on my strategies. A product management path seems very promising for this.

Does anyone who switched from consulting to product management have any recommendations of h helpful PM books, courses, or programs?

If I am not able to gain admission to Harvard Business School, but wanted a similar educational experience to become a consultant, should I attend Harvard Extension?

Sometimes the leadership does not even inform you on the status of a submitted proposal unless we win the work. I get why they are doing it but it would be great if there was an external source/website that would share this info instead of us waiting around to hear from them.

Our annual reviews are approaching & one of my direct reports has been with us for almost six years w/ little growth. My reco was to let him go & find a stronger, hungrier & more motivated designer at the same level. However, my boss instead wants us to promote him in hopes that will spark some motivation. I am not behind this decision & have voiced my multitude of concerns in promoting an employee who doesn't deserve it. HR is behind the decision! Thoughts on promoting an undeserving report?
