I actually came from an admin assistant role to my health system's Epic department. Before the admin position I worked as a patient access rep where I was an Epic user.
Honestly, that's one of the simplest ways to start. Unfortunately, those access roles don't pay too well but you will get tons of experience. Since you're not clinical, you'll want to look at non clinical applications to start with. Grand Central is patient movement. So admitting, day surgery, Emergency room front desk is a good place to start. Prelude is registration and works with Grand Central. Cadence is scheduling. You can also look at roles in HIM and Cogito, which is reports.
My experience as a healthcare admin helps me with the Cogito app, I'm back up trainer for that app.
I started in our Epic department as a trainer and now I'm an analyst for Prelude and RTE. I will also be back up for Grand Central, all paid by the organization.
Somebody that works for Epic can't refer you? I used to work for Cerner and referred people all the time and they are Epics biggest competitor so I am curiosu why it has to come from within the hospital?
