Hi I’m new to billables as I was on a non-billable account before. I have a question about billable hours for an SAE/AM roles, is 75% to 80% of your weekly hours the standard.

depends on the agency - most of the large agencies are looking for 90-95% + (even the ones that aren’t sweatshops expect you to be to billable)

like

Yes, if it’s a good agency they will reserve time for non-billable. If it’s a sweat shop they will push you to be 100% billable. We push to see 75% billable for AM roles

My firm’s IT (especially system saving and file locating function) is so bad 😐😞 and they keep doing updates no one asked them for just to mess with the stuff we already got a hang of without doing anything about the issues we actually need fixed. Anyone else in a similar boat? Do you bill the client for the time it takes to fix the IT issue (or IT inefficiency generally, like time taken to find a file in a convoluted system)? Or is that supposed to be our non-billable time?

Have any of you taken "low bono" clients while working at a firm? I want to take on a low bono client or two but not sure who would get the money. This is a contract opportunity through a non profit so I'm assuming a 1099 will be issued. The per hour rate is significantly less than my billable rate. I would (obviously) like the money but my real objective is just getting experience/networking since I recently moved to a new state and don't have clients of my own.

I currently work at a medium sized firm and have about two years experience in personal injury litigation. The billable hours and lack of work life balance are really getting to me and I am looking to switch to something else out of litigation, preferably in house. I am also looking to relocate to a different state. How do I go about properly marketing myself to companies that might not take my relocation and minimal experience seriously?

Billables are low this month. Like I have 65 billable hours in so far. I’ve messaged partners over the last week to try and get more cases but there are tons of new associates who were just onboarded and were at a low point for business. I’m freaking out

I’ve practiced litigation in DC for about 5+ years at a larger plaintiffs’ firm, and am considering a switch to a defense firm. Is there any insight to how many billable hours this would require, and how much time that would actually be? For reference, the firm has a 1900 billable hour requirement and the partner said I would have “no problem” fulfilling that based on the work they have.

Why do recruiters never tell you which agency they want to talk to you about until they get you on the phone? My challenge to everyone of you. Every leader, every future leader, everybody who will lead this industry one day: when we get back to normal, whatever that will look like, get personally involved again with recruiting, hiring and mentoring. DO NOT leave personnel decisions to HR, alone. DO Not rely on the parasitic temp agencies like creative circle and Aquent to do all the work. Get involved. Give a damn. A creative leader saw value in me, l assume someone saw value in you too. Pay it forward.
