Hi there! I have been applying for data science jobs for a while but have had no luck. I am completing my PhD, have relevant experience, have worked on multiple DS projects resulting in publications. I have gotten my Resume checked. I am wondering if I am approaching the market correctly. Does cold applying ever work - I don’t have a lot of networks? And do people use cover letters in their applications? What can I do to get my foot in the door - seems impossible atm and very disheartening.

Cold applications are slammed with more experienced resumes right now, and experience on a resume trumps everything else in nearly all cases.

For you it's either a new grad pipeline or creating a network. Otherwise recruiters won't even get to look at what you're submitting because it gets ranked near the bottom.

Just a bad market though. Disagree with M1's assessment.

Yeah I think M1 is wrong as well. There is a huge need for DS with the galore of data available, hiring is probably just slowed while companies wait out the economy for a bit.

like

Also disagree with M1, Data Science is huge as ever. Do you have a website linking to your portfolio and publications on your resume next to your LinkedIn? That would help!

Data science field is going dark. The really smart ones automated too many things (chat GPT etc), and the business ones are less reliant on the hyper technical folks to get their analyses due to general increased technical acumen of working professionals (younger generation) and more powerful tools available to them. I would not seek to enter into “data science” right now unless you have a strong angle, like your PhD is in computer vision (self driving cars or something) or theoretical physics (quant financ, think citadel, two sigma). Otherwise you’ll be underpaid and hard to hire tbh

smart

Send me a DM. I'll see if your background is fit for our team (Data Science). Where do you live?

Thank you! I sent you a dm.

I was recently offered a Zoom interview. The school had 10 interview slots for me to choose from. Three were one day this week and the rest are next week. I chose the first time slot available. Should I have waited until one of the last slots so I was fresher on their mind when choosing a candidate? I am just sitting here stressing out until I here something. Also, do interviewers still appreciate a hand written thank you for the interview?

My AD coworker (not currently my partner) just got hired at a new agency and wants to bring me along as his writer. I'd love to join. He told the recruiter at that agency about me and sent my book. I also have another former coworker (creative) who put in a good word for me.

Should I reach out to the recruiter, too? Or is that overkill after two recos? I don't want to be bothersome. But I do want to show interest..

This all happened on Friday, if that matters. Thanks!

Is it possible to apply straight (rather than moving laterally in London, waiting a few years then transferring?) interested in MBB views too. (I would have roughly 2.5 YOE by then)

Sorry if this is already asked. Any links or thoughts on impeachment continuing after the term is over?
