I harness the nervous energy to sound enthusiastic
Hahaha yea I try to do that too!
Consider joining your local Toastmasters. This provides a safe forum to hone your public speaking skills and has helped many people I’ve known.
I got choked up and fumbled my words on my first deliverable presentation. Afterwards the Partner overseeing the project pulled me aside and gave me advice. He said to focus on breathing. I started using the Calm app to help address some of my public speaking anxieties and nervousness in general. It has helped! Check it out :)
A lot of times it doesn’t actually come across that way even though internally when you’re talking you might sound shaky to yourself. Record yourself and hear what you sound like or ask a colleague after presenting.
Great tip. Have someone record yourself as well so you notice any ticks, swaying, too much hands, etc.
Slow, controlled, meditative breathing. I've given hundreds of presentations, a TEDx talk, and countless executive briefings and my heart still races every time I start talking.
Pay attention to your heart rate and breathing, and focus on long, slow, full breaths.
Mind posting your ted talk link ? Curious..
I like to speak slowly and stop pretty often to gauge the room/ask questions. It allows the partner or director to chime in with thoughts and prevents me for speaking for an hour straight.
For me I turn myself into a grumpy mood. The more grumpy I am, the less nervous I get...
By believing whatever you are saying
Practicing beforehand has helped me a ton! Even if it’s a last minute thing and i only have a few minutes, I like to think of talking points and questions that might be asked beforehand and jot them down.
How about getting comfortable doing so, rather than "working" to fake it? Some ideas
1. Get a communications coach
2. Leverage any opportunities to speak to big groups (professional and social)
3. If it has to do with self confidence, maybe seek help from friends, family, mentors, therapists, etc
4. Give it time, and leverage what you accomplish from the three above.
