from a new grad perspective, assuming ur "build equations" is estimating market sizes - what I personally found helpful is I would start with topics I'm really comfortable with, ie how many pasta restaurants are in nyc, or how many 3 pointers are scored per game, and after I became more comfortable my mental block just went away, if you can do mental math well, then I would just say practice more
definitely try visualizing then, drawing a few lines out can really help your mind get more organized so your mental math process won't be all over the place
Or if what you’re talking about is more case maths, I’d recommend you try to sound out in words what you’re aiming to solve before getting bogged down in numbers. E.g,. If I know the revenues for this year and I know that the units sold are going to increase by X percent next year, what do I need to figure out to apply that? Well I need to get the number of units sold this year, which I can do by dividing our total revenue by the price. Then if I apply the percentage change I’ll be able to figure it out. Rather than just seeing all the numbers and blanking a bit, thinking aloud the logic behind what I need to do has definitely helped me.
