1) I record and document all "HR moments"
2) I keep my actual personality at home
3) I created a strong network of POC in my industry that I can reach out to for anything I need (job opportunities, advice, skills, mentorship, happy hours)
4) Be very assertive and "know my shit" at all times
5) Create avenues for other POC to enter the team
6) Realize that most of corp America does not look like me. Create relationships with the genuine non POC and either ignore or flirt with the wives of the ones who piss you off
7) Milly rock on every block
Its not what you want to hear but I try to not think of myself this way and just think of myself as a coworker to get my foot in the door, it only adds to my nerves
Were they saying things in regard to your race? If so, I would file a report with HR. If it was just something about you personally like they just don't like your personality you can bring it up to them or just live with the fact that they don't like you
It wasn’t about race. It was they don’t like my personality and “can’t figure me out” because I don’t interact with the team as much. When I first joined another black woman was leaving and told me to “be careful” because they have a habit of “firing” black women for “poor performance.” Luckily I found a new job but I’m worried they’ll reach out to my new employer and say something that’s not true. That same coworker who left tried to sue but was paid out.
