I used to do this, until I realized that they’re not that interested in understanding. So now I just brag about how much money I make /s
Lol I don't. I know they won't understand. And I couldn't care less if they do or not. I'm not doing it for them.
I always say “I work with the numbers that isn’t financial based, but plays into how the company makes money”
That simple statement usually gives them the gist and then they understand it enough to ask other questions
“I dig up information from various sources to help my brand/clients make better, smarter decisions.”
I’ve been working in data roles for 20 years. My family still have no clue what I do 😂
I'm a financial analyst and I say "I make the dollars make sense"
I pick things up I put things down
See all those TV ads? I find out whether they’re driving sales for the products they promote.
If you do it properly “I extract stories from numbers that help people make business decisions”. If you don’t the “I crunch numbers”
In the apocalypse, I will contribute in one of two ways:
1. I could make charts
2. Soylent Green
Just simplify to it's essence and always assume you are talking to someone with very little understanding of what you do. I'm a UX/CX Strategist. I tell ppl "I help teams make decisions to plan, design and build software and digital products". If they want more detail and seem interested, I can always share more. But I don't start with the "advanced" version of what I do, because most ppl don't really want to know the inside-baseball description of it.
I could tell them anything I liked. They won’t really listen and will still have it fixed in their mind that I’m doing the same shit job I did for 6 months in my twenties.
I just say “you know how two people can go on the exact same website and see two completely different ads in the exact same place? That’s my job”
I (used to) generate answers to all the different types of questions businesses have - where they are succeeding, failing, and whether the next decision they (want to) make would be a good one.
