In no particular order.
- Yes, red flags in the interview. If you interview with the hiring manager or a 'peer', ask tough questions. Ask their least favorite thing about working there.
- Glassdoor. Be sure and take the good with the bad. If there are lots of reviews, try and focus on the most recent.
- Use LinkedIn! I have absolutely found mutual connections through LinkedIn who work for, or even better, no longer work for the company I'm interviewing with. I ask them about their experience. I have found these to be the most enlightening.
- Here (Fishbowl)
The biggest red flag for me over the years is a lack of clarity around the role - because this means to me that they will expect me to wear too many hats and spread myself out too thin.
Second this
Anytime you ask about the culture, if its a series of vague and generalized answers that shows right away its a terrible place to work.
Honestly, I have done it. I didn't see any red flags until after I started. And even reviews I had read for the place were stellar. Sometimes it really is just hard to tell.
@a1 - that’s the same situation I’m in right now. Smaller company so there wasn’t a lot on Glassdoor, but all the interviews were good and there weren’t any red flags and now I’m here and desperately trying to get out because it’s such a a dysfunctional organization.
Industry matters a lot. Manufacturing and freight tend to be more high stress. CPG can be in there too.
I would say looking for key indicators during your interview, remember they aren’t just gauging you, you are gauging them as well. Ask about the culture, work-life balance, how many people are on the team (once you made it through the initial round and talking with the hiring manager). Just be yourself honestly, and see if can spot anything that could be red flags early. Do your research too. Maybe look at the current or recent personnel on LinkedIn (on hidden mode) and see what their trajectory has been in the most recent/current roles.
