How does your firm calculate utilization? My firm’s billable requirement is 1850, but our utilization percentage is calculated based on 40 hours billed per week (2080/year). Pro bono work counts towards billable requirement , but isn’t included in our utilization numbers. This seems out of sorts… Yearly requirement is fine, but it just feels like the numbers don’t match up. I don’t feel like my utilization expectations/work are being accurately accounted for.

If your bonus is based on 1850, dont sweat it.

I have not heard that utilisation is calculated on anything other than real billable hours similar to realisation per fee earner.

Choices:

1. Bring this up in town hall meeting or in email to managing partner.

2. Realize that if everyone is on the same scale, your concern does not matter enough to pay attention to.

like

Oh I am under no illusions that anyone cares enough about it to change it - I was just curious to see if this is the norm.

Interesting that pro bono isn’t included - so you can spend a solid week working on one pro bono matter and be counted as unutilised? Presumably this only matters for work allocation, but still….

YEP. I also find it odd that it’s not based on our billable requirement, but some other random number. The difference isn’t huge, but I don’t look as busy as other even though I’m on track to hit hours.

Do you pay your credit cards in full every month?

I ask because I’ve let my credit spending get a bit lax since moving and adopting a puppy recently, so I haven’t been paying them off in full every month like I used to (though still well above the minimum payment, and keeping utilization at 30% or under). It got me thinking about how many people adhere to this advice.

Busy season was rough, things are looking better now as things return to normal. Still working crazy hours if you count the daycare duties on top of utilization targets.

I’ve been fully utilized starting ~June, but first few months were slow. Am i fine?!

Anyone have slow months where you burn through a lot of your allotted pro bono/professional development hours to keep hitting minimum daily hours? The past few weeks have been like this for me.
