Probably around 100-120k. Maybe less if you barely eat out. I’m at 130k base and live alone, spend on good meals once in a while, go out with friends, travel a lot and live very comfortably. Still got some left for investing and saving. Assuming no student debt.
Nope
In an ideal situation, $152K. This doesn’t lead to an overly extravagant lifestyle, but enough to be satisfied. Roast me if you want but I think it’s reasonable:
$3K - Rent a nice studio, I get to comfortably live alone with some amenities
$2.1K - Max out 401K and IRA (both post tax). In an ideal state my retirement isn’t hindered by living in the city.
$2K - personal savings for unexpected expenses and rainy days, this is invested after emergency fund is built
$1K - food and entertainment (includes groceries, going out)
$200 - utilities (phone, electricity, internet, Netflix, Spotify)
This brings the total budget to $8.3K, which is what we want after taxes. Used a NYC tax calculator and you need $12.6K before taxes to make that, which is $152K.

I make the same as you but spend $2100 for a nice waterfront condo in NJ. Takes me 8 mins to Manhattan.

$125K minimum and you should still budget. NYC gets so expensive
I’ve lived really well In nyc and never made that lol and I’ve been here for 6 years and still vacation etc

I live alone on 75k but it depends on lifestyle

Forest hills
Struggling on 175k but that’s because of bschool loans ☹️

Nobody in Chinatown is going to cut very curly, thick hair properly and absolutely not for $15.

About 100k, but more if you have any kind of savings goals.

NYC is expensive, so one size fits all rules don’t necessarily work the same way here as they do in the rest of the country. Don’t forget you can flex housing up a bit because you’re not paying for a car, gas, insurance, etc.
But! Good point that many landlords in Manhattan and certain other desirable areas will require 40x rent income or else a guarantor making 80x.

The primary question here is WHERE in NYC do you want to live? The numbers will be wildly different if you’re confining yourself to Manhattan south of 96th or northwest Brooklyn and LIC than if you’re willing to go further out.
$55k
Same, had roommates. Also did not put away any retirement money during that time.

$150k for basic comfort. $300k for upper middle class comfort.
For me, that happened at $85,000 but I chose to live in Astoria and then Williamsburg.
If you have a 2 bed and a roommate, $80k did it for me. Was living well. Went to be school make almost $200k now and my life is ridiculously cool. Putting away thousands a month towards savings ($40k in a year), going to concerts and eating out constantly, it’s a nice life

I’ve lived on 65K in Astoria
Totally variable depending on what your expectations are. If you don’t need to live in manhattan, I’d say around $100k
25, $138K. Live alone in Greenwich Village, in a serious relationship. I break even monthly after rent, bills, groceries (split), date nights (1 nice ~$250 evening every 1-2 weeks), drinks once weekly, and maxing out all retirement vehicles.
Basically. Max fundings my Roth IRA, Roth 401k and HSA. Have my emergency fund. Checking and my brokerage that remain at a fairly constant amount.

I made $8k one year living in NYC for reference and still had a sweet time. I was upstarting a business (rent was business expense so not in the $8k salary). I made it work. Living in Clinton Hill with 2 guys in a very nice 3bd/3bath with tons of space.
