I am a senior BDO in the lending business and was let go due to a corporate reorg. Am a couple years past standard retirement age, but was planning on working for several more years. Given these circumstances, I am wide open to opportunities outside my previous areas of concentration, but have no idea how much the age issue is a barrier to finding something with decent pay and work requirements. Anyone have insights on this issue?

Ageism is definitely a factor in the current economy. One piece of advice is to keep your resume from giving away your age. Only include the last 15 years or so of work history and don’t include the year of your degree.

Once you get an interview it’s in your hands to sell your abilities, but getting that far is difficult if your resume blocks you.

I have been struggling since I was in my 50's. I have been working and will continue to keep working if someone is willing to hire me. The alternative would be to do nothing all day since I don't have any additional income for hobbies. Over the past few years, I have interviewed for many roles but I was not hired. I have worked a couple of contract roles and also worked in a retail store for a short-time. At this point, I am just trying to save some additional money to contribute to my retirement income. You just need to update your resume, register with an employment agency and reach out to your network. If you enjoy preparing taxes you could become an enrolled agent. Intuit is always hiring experienced tax preparers. I have former colleagues who are still working as tax preparers. You could also try to turn a hobby into a full-time role.

I think it depends on your profession. I just retired (June of 24) due to work stress etc. I was a mental health specialist in the schools.
My last day was on a Thursday and by the following Monday I had 3 jobs. I applied to many jobs, just for fun really on that Friday the day after leaving. I had NO idea how many jobs are out there. In the end I decided I don’t want to continue doing this - I’ve been in the field 41 years. I continue to be solicited however on a daily basis even 6.5 months later for jobs in state and out of state. It’s crazy! This demand was not there years and years ago. In fact finding a decent job was consider rare. Times have changed, that’s for sure.

Hi Everyone!

A company has made an offer and I wanted to understand if i'm being made a fool.

The monthly compensation is 1,37,500 (16,50,000 yearly) and Variable component (Bonus) is 1,50,000.

However in the offer it says "You shall be paid an annual compensation of Rs. 16,50,000/- per annum Cost to Company."

Which to me sounds like it doesn't consider 1,50,000 to be a part of CTC which is suspicious to me.

How should I deal with this?

Thank you!

So had my first interview in one of the big 4 but it got me completely off guard. First one was call screening and then a technical interview. Now what I didn’t expect is rather than technicalities they focused on the consulting a lot more. Now the role that was marketed was technical/Architect and they even said that in current capacity you’ll work here as a technical person. I don’t think it went well. Coming from a technical background I was hoping for coding .
Is it always like this?

My professional life at the moment is far from ideal. I’ve been on quarantine (long story, but a good one) for the last seven years. Royalties from my books don’t pay the bills. My entrepreneurial pursuits remain hampered. For the interim, I’ve been looking for a remote opportunity where I can leverage my skills in marketing, sales, social media, and elsewhere for a decent sum. I have a social media presence which, in recent years, reached millions. There has to be something exciting I can do.

Would take 3-4 years to get to this level of comp as would be buying 10% per year up to 40% of the firm. Am I stupid for not taking this? Currently manager making 125k. Comp first year as junior partner would be 120k with 10% ownership.
