I am a VP with compensation of ₹48Lpa in India. Have an offer of €65K in Germany. The German offer is at a lower position and lower compensation as I do not know German (as yet) and senior roles would require client interaction (German clients).

I see it as an opportunity to get my foot into Germany on a EU Blue Card and then look for something better once there.

I am in a non-IT role.

Any thoughts?

Can you tell your YOE ? I think the german compensation is on the very low side & the taxation is also on the higher side. If u have exp around 6 yoe , then the pay seems fine . Did u check with company HR for the gross and net calculations on the pay per month?

like

Personally I would also take the offer..as not much dependent on job and want to try overseas..can surely get better offer once learnt German..but till that time it will be like hell..esp if you go with family with that salary..

like

Look from longer term ,your Indian CTC is touching upper bracket of what Indian IT is usually offering for leadership position if non cloud tech. Moving above your current CTC in India there will be limited offering excluding Google,Microsoft and amazon plus these company will also offer esop related stuff but limited in-hand whereas with German offer in coming year u can touch 90k - 100k very easily plus various European,US,UK and Cad market will also open.

What makes you think 48LPA is an upper band in India ???

If your wife also works there. Then it might be good

like

No doubt offer is too low but if money is not a first priority you go ahead. Do not worry about recession, there are high chances that EU will come strong out of it and meanwhile you would have adjusted yourself as per their norms.

like

Its very low sir one of my client works as software engineer with 3-4 years experience and having salary of 70€ . Please give a thought to decision

like

45% tax.. 😬😬😮😮

It's very low... First of all... I was there in czech for sometime, this will be negligible after deducting tax with respect of your indian salary... Atleast it has to be 4 times of your salary then you have to go, otherwise NO.

like

Agreed... But switch your career in other countries with minimum leads to a fresh start at the professional era is a tough task, if you have enough courage to beat this in that competitive environment then of course have to go, but if want to work smarter and harder then don't revalue your position. Wait for the right opportunity.

48 in India is great, more than great.. If i were you i would not have taken up Germany's offer as current in India is way much.
But finally its your choice, what are your preferences thats what matters here.

like

Not a great time to work in Europe currently.
Indian economic conditions are much better comparatively.

Choose wisely.

likefunny

65k is comparatively low but I know single friends who moved to Germany a year ago at the same packages and are living basic middle class budgeted life there and able to save a bit for their travels. The choice is simple - you either go for the thrill and adventure of living in a European country, travel and explore the diverse culture, coming out of your comfort zone, experience drastically different weathers, language barriers, challenges that come with German bureaucracy, budgeting, building your social circle from scratch etc in another continent OR you stick to your comfort zone and continue living like a King near your family and friends with a set eco system.
Entirely depends where you are and what you want to do with it.

likehelpful

Your offer amount falls into 42% tax bracket in Germany.
So consider that as well.

42% of €65k will go in govt. pockets

like

Well if you think that way, in terms of lifestyle not just money, then I think you should go.

If €37.7 is enough for you to live there while also being able saving few amount from it.

like

Short answer: Continue with your current role in India

Reasons:
1. 65K euros is what beginners in IT role get. Infact more.
2. Your prior experience here might not be as relevant there as it is here. I've known friends with Tier-1 degrees starting as analysts in Germany after working in India for couple of years.
3. The German economy like most of Europe is not in a good shape now and is expected to get worse. Risk of layoffs will always be looming over your head.
4. Don't expect to get in with a lower salary and then switch and increase your salary when the time is right. Unlike India, the yearly hikes are minimal (1-3%) and so are the job switch hikes.

The best time to get to Germany is as soon as you graduate. With 7+ years of experience, one has generally missed the bus and the opportunity cost of moving to Germany is very high.

What you can do?
1. Look out for offers in the Netherlands. The expat tax structure is more friendly and the pay is also higher than Germany.
2. Look for FAANG like companies in Germany. They generally pay well and value your prior experience.

For you, the minimum that you should be targetting is 150k and if quality of life is more important than other factors then at least 120k.

like

Depends on your priorities.. if its to get your foot in the door, its not a bad idea to take this opportunity and switch once you get there! Good luck!

Considering that there's very limited scope of increasing your salary much in Indian market, its probably more wise to shift to Germany which can offer you more growth prospects. Also considering recession in 2023, it's going to be difficult time for very senior positions in India.

Before I answer il put some questions which can help you decide.
- are you single or married and having kids ?
- VP in different companies means different levels. VP in a bank is ok. VP in a service company is a huge deal. Which industry are you from ?
- How legitimate is the company that's recruiting you in Germany ? The pay is almost the same as what you get now in India. Whatever be the math the pay is not attractive considering higher taxes and cost of living
- the role you being recruited for is a full time or a contract position ? You can also opt as a consultant role that way you could saving a little more on taxes with an auditor.

Now from what i read here are my thoughts. If you are single you can take the risk by taking a pay cut . The uncertainty is how long the company can have you and how long you planning to be in this company before you make the jump to the dream job. This can't be less than an year or 2 for sure. In EU I have noticed company evaluates how long employees spend in a company . Going for a less pay is ok as long as the company is a well known company and has brand value. Working in a mediocre less known company doesn't mean it will help you get a good job in a top company .

like

Thank you for your thoughts and detailed reply. The idea is to surely look for something immediately once I am there, suitable for my yoe and skills. I am already working on German as that's the main bottleneck. The opportunity I have is from a decent brand, not a top brand but not an unknown brand either. The questions on my mind:
1. Will organisations in Germany see it as an issue that I am looking for something, immediately after joining an organisation is Germany?
2. Do German companies say we'l give you only x% hike on current German salary (like it is in India) or German companies don't talk about current salary (the €65k that I will be having there when I will be looking out) when they discuss offers.

65k is very less if you compare 48L from India. But if your mindset is to get into Germany then you can consider it. You will have another benefits like child support, free education and free healthcare. Standard of living. Germany is far better in these terms.

Hey! Any Google folks know if it’s possible to negotiate fully remote if a contract role is hybrid? Personally, I don’t want to relocate and go to the office on a contract role given the current economy. Plus, I’m assuming contractors are the first to go in layoffs. I just think it’s a fair trade off if I’d be allowed to work fully remote. I’m also trying to have flexibility to manage my Airbnb business in a different country. Same time zone as the home office if I’d travel weeks at a time.
