I am an incoming intern to KPMG in the healthcare solutions practice. How can I stand out in a virtual internship to ensure I get a return offer?

Do good work

like

To piggyback on the above - do stuff. You’re going to likely try hard and do too much. Engage with the people you’re working with like they are people, build some kind of relationship. Do what you’re asked of and respond confidently/not defensively about corrections.

Almost all of it will be based on your relationship w/whoever. Be genuine, you’re nigh transparent.

In consulting aren’t return offers given 90%+ of the time ?

like

Yeah, but they make it seem like they aren’t and that 10% seems REALLY random when you’re an intern.

Always good to try and make a good impression if you plan to return full time.

like

Don't screw up, network in your group, ask how you can help if you don't have much going on and you'll be fine.

like

Pretty much this, as long as you don’t stand out in a negative fashion and do the job you are asked it will most likely result in an offer. The firm has already invested a lot of money into you and it is much easier to retain an intern than start from scratch with a new hire.

like

Try to figure things out yourself before asking a question

like

Take on any work without complaint - even if it isn’t health care
Ask questions
Network
Be on time and be present (on camera and not multi tasking)
Take risks and ask for feedback
Use the feedback
Schedule time with your PM if they don’t schedule time with you

like

-Tactfully ask to do a screen share with your manager or senior if they are doing a quick bit of analysis and provide a voice over. Multiple associates have asked me for this and I’m sometimes receptive
-when you feel like you stuck on something, it’s fine to raise your hand but try to come up with a potential solution to whatever problem you’re dealing with
-there’s a reason you’re being asked to do something, try to understand how that fits into the broader engagement
-have a good attitude, don’t be defensive when you mess up. Make life easier for the people on your team

Congrats on getting an internship, I know it’s been super stressfull for new graduates securing jobs in a pandemic, so well done!

Given you’re just starting out in consulting and your internship won’t be long enough for you to learn about the job in depth, I would suggest you play this strategically and work with what you have.

Look, not everything in consulting is glamorous - there certainly is some admin to do, for example tracking financials and doing engagement management (sorting out risks and setting up opportunities). There will always be some need for slides to be tidied up, so if I were you I would swallow my pride and ask for work and hit the ground running.

Ask to help with tracking financials, FileSite maintenance / risk management , setting up a new opportunity, putting together decks / tidying up slides, anything you can get your hands on. And make sure you keep track of what you’ve delivered until the end of the internship, you want to show you’re not afraid to roll up your sleeves and get the job the done, whatever the project needs.

Secure this job and I promise you more exciting work will come your way! Good luck 👍🏻

There was an intern I worked with who got the offer because word on the street was they took exceptional meeting minutes. Later when someone looked up the old minutes they were all copied from client documents and random stuff

It’s rare an intern doesn’t get an offer! Just remember they hired you as an intern so you belong!

Maybe in your practice that’s true but we have an evaluation in ours for full time offers and any of the directors you worked on can block a return offer.

Literally nothing....just seem smart and sociable.

Looking for some mental health advice - I’ve been dealing with pretty debilitating anxiety/panic attacks for over 5 years. Finally started to get some help for it through medication, however the first 3 meds my PCP prescribed me (ssris) didn’t work. Because I haven’t deal with the anxiety it’s gotten really bad. Do I go to a pyscitatrist whose trained more in pharma or start with therapist. Have done therapy in past without much help.

Hi newby here. I am international and only been in the US for a couple years so I wanted to ask a few questions about the chase saphire. What is the best way to apply for it to get the best deal? Any additional benefits beyond the 100k points? Is it ok to apply without an account in chase? How long does it takes to receive? What is the limit of the card? I am planning to buy something that is like 4,200 so I want to ask for the card but want to make sure I will be able to pay that much at once

When I was a device driver developer with 2 years relevant experience I had got calls from Nvidia and Qualcomm. Unfortunately I wasn't able to crack the interviews back then.

For next 5 years I worked mostly on application development and broadening my exposure. I am not getting even a single call from such companies now.

Is it a good idea to rebrand myself as a device driver developer so that I can get calls again?

I'm a first yr attorney at an insurance firm and am in the process of interviewing for an in-house position at a tech company. The position is pretty much generalist, but I get the impression I'd be working mostly on SaaS and partnership transactions. I definitely think I would like the transactional work better, but I am concerned about the long-term earning potential vs. partnership. How common is it to eventually make $400k+ in-house/how difficult is it to transition back to a firm? Thanks!

A quick note about what I’ve experienced, in my decade long career, is the real advantage of MBB or FAANG - it gives you a shot at stretch roles that are outside your expertise. Not all the time or even most of the time compared to better candidates with specific experience for the role but gives you this wildcard shot at a vast array of opportunities.
