It’s not a bad thing but nobody expects you to have one (in my experience) at an agency. If you do get it, be aware that you may not got much (if any) salary increase to offset the tuition expense. If you’re going to get it be sure of your reasons why and what you want from it before committing. Lots of client side folks have one but many do not.
You do not need an MBA to work in client services. You'll get better and more current education from online and free resources. Start with HubSpot Academy and their marketing certifications.
The degree only matters if it taught you something and improved your ability to generate value for the business.
My mba was huge for me but the promotions and raises didn’t come from the piece of paper. They came from applying what I learned on the job.
This is where my line of thinking was going. I'm already involved in business development at my agency, both growing my current accounts and competing for new work. I'm interested in how account mgmt work looks outside of the day to day of keeping account work on track
Get the MBA. Doesn’t matter if it’s needed or not. If you want a leg up for the rest of your career, do it.
It is not going to be worth much, if anything. It 100% will never be worth the financial investment. The value of the MBA is commonly acknowledged to have tanked and it is in very specific markets that it is still worth something. Advertising is definitely not one of them.
If you have to take out massive loans to attend, don't do it. It could be beneficial if you go client side, but if you plan to stay agency side, you'll advance naturally. Account services has a relatively clear ladder for advancement with a lot of steps. An MBA is a waste of money and time (speaking from experience).
I got an MBA because I initially was pursuing a career track in Brand Management on the client side and then switched to Advertising in account management. It’s not really needed or valued on the agency side in account management. Also consider your long term goals and ROI on the cost of an MBA program. Client side roles in marketing especially at a senior level an MBA is valued and compensation may provide a positive return on cost of education.
