Your lived experience is important. Period.
What kinds of input do they see as “too subjective?”
Is this something they’re singling you out for, or are others subjected to this level of critique on their perspectives?
Can they make a concrete list of guardrails for you? (Not that you need to follow it but more just to have a record for HR of the ways in which you in particular are being asked to be quiet)
Sounds like your boss’s suggestion is subjective. I think there’s always a time and a place to bring yourself into the work. It always depends the audience and the context so it’s hard to judge in a broad sense.
Maybe it’s the delivery? Is the suggestion given in a constructive way for example.
sounds like he understands diversity but doesn’t understand inclusion or equity.
Option a) tell him “hey when you said this it made me feel unwelcome.” And send him the definitions “Diversity refers to the traits and characteristics that make people unique while inclusion refers to the behaviors and social norms that ensure people feel welcome.”
Option b:
The next time your boss asks you how your weekend was, say “it was great. I watched Disclosure and it was so refreshing to see a representative film that *finally* educates people about the transphobic, white supremacist, patriarchal society we live in. And how it reminded you why you’re so glad to work in advertising so you can help others feel comfortable being their full and best selves—even at work!” Then be like “it’s on Netflix btw *sends link* 🙃
