I had an amazing review yesterday. Everything said was positive. And yet I didn’t get a promotion or even a bonus. Was told to keep trucking and should get one at some point this year. I do way more than what a jr would do at any agency and I really would like a raise and promotion. I don’t want to be taken advantage of but afraid that I won’t be hired as an AD without having that promotion first.

I was at an agency for 5 years, trying to make the jump from studio to creative as a Jr Designer for 3 of those 5. When I finally put in my notice because I got that title elsewhere my boss had the balls to say “you should have left 2 years ago” even though during those 2 years he swore he was trying to help me make the jump as I did additional projects on top of my daily work. Just go. If you don’t start looking and interviewing you’ll never know if you’ll get the title you’re looking for. And if you do feel that you deserve it, your book should speak for itself. Good luck!

like

No worries! I was a production artist in the studio. So getting files ready to go to print, building out web banners, etc. Not designing my own work. By creative I mean the creative team, designers, writers and art directors.

Tale as old as time. In November 2019 my CD at my old agency told me they’d promote me from junior in 2020 (I’d been at the agency for about 15 months).

Then he used the covid excuse to withhold the promotion even though leadership were constantly saying how great of a year it had been financially and constantly hiring new people.

I decided to get the promotion elsewhere and when I put in my notice in November 2020, my CD had the gall to say he was disappointed because he was gonna push for me to be promoted to mid in 2021.

Don’t wait for those fuckos to promote you. If they don’t value you, find someone else who will.

Thank you all! I appreciate everyone’s advice and taking the time to give proper feedback on the situation!

I’ll say it a bit nicer than CD1, but that’s kind of the job. We’re still in the midst of a pandemic, and it’s a tough time for anyone to be getting a raise or promotion. That’s great you’re working hard, but are you already doing work at AD level? It often takes performing a level above before you get promoted to that role. How long you’ve been in the role, intends politics, etc are all going to play a role too. It’s not as simple as doing your job and just getting promoted.

I remember my first yearly review at my first job. I was desperately hoping for a raise from the slave wages I was making, and I felt I deserved one. Instead I was torn apart, had my confidence destroyed and I was fired. That was ten years ago, and while my career has recovered, emotionally I don't think I ever have. It was only the 3rd most traumatic thing that's happened to me, but just because I've lost both my parents.

So...y'know...could be worse.

like

Dang this is my exact situation as well, except there aren’t any formal reviews and I’m the one pushing to set these up. Can’t offer any advice but here to commiserate so you know you’re not alone 💪🏼

like

Thank you! Yeah I just feel if I’m helping manage lower level creatives I shouldn’t be a jr but as people have mentioned the promotions don’t always go to our plan. I hope it can all work out for yoh

Does your agency tie performance reviews to comp/promo cycles? Ours does not

Ours does. And it’s yearly. So unless there is a good reason as to why I should be promoted I may have to wait another year. Cuz it was a great review. I haven’t heard from anyone getting promoted either.

If you’re at an agency within a holding group promotions and raises usually come at certain points throughout the year as they are given out in a cycle. So they might just waiting for that. But the best way to get a promotion and a solid raise it to change shops.

Time to leave

Looking for advice! I was approved to work remotely but my salary will decrease 10%. I received two raises so the decrease brings me down to my previous salary. I was told that it’s due to the cost of labor in the area.

I’ve been with my company for 8+ yrs, I love my manager and the work I do (engagement, recognition, & wellness programs) but I feel like I’m limiting myself since I have the experience, an HRM degree, and SHRM-CP credentials.

Should I apply for roles outside the company?

How do I be a decent manager to a coworker who's upset I've been promoted twice in two years and they haven't? We started out as coworkers, became decent friends after a few good moments, but went back to simply coworkers after they flubbed a few projects and I had to step in to clean up. I'm non-confrontational but year-end reviews are right around the corner and I'm worried about having to act professional to someone who I got too close with and who now hates me.
