I have 1.5 years tax litigation experience with the IRS and looking to transition into big 4 m&a or natl tax. Before IRS, practiced civil and criminal litigation at a small law firm for 14 years, taking basically whatever walked in the door. Any suggestions on how to get in the door and what positions to look at (e.g. associate vs senior assoc.)?

Look for tax controversy jobs - with that much experience I think you’d be looking at manager roles but not totally sure

Thank you!

You should look into the controversy groups, including WNT controversy.

M&A and international WNT generally requires relevant IRS or big law experience, which based on your description, you don’t have.

Try and tailor your 14+ years of experience applicable to tax and clients. What you may lack in tax experience, you probably have in dealing with people.

Thanks so much!

Do you have any accounting background or experience in M&A or international tax? If not, it may be difficult to get in the door although your IRS background might help in WNT/controversy.

No accounting background. I only took M&A and int’l tax in the Tax LLM program I completed a few years ago.

I was wondering if the review course “CPE Self Study Course” for the CFF was enough preparation to study and pass the CFF exam. The CFE review course was enough and like if you get a question wrong it explains it well so that when it comes up in a different way in the real exam you can still get it. But when I saw the outline for the CFF material and there seems to be a lot of topics so I was wondering if the review course was sufficient considering this exam is also multiple choice. Thanks!
