Some people are high performers, it is difficult for them to give out praises for something that is enough to get the job done.
Think from his perspective, if he has to give feedback so much then he thinks the work is inadequate. Once team fixes the mistakes or acts on feedback, he probably doesn’t feel like this deserves a praise.
I work with some high performers and i see perfection in their work. Those people expect same quality from others.
Now for argument sake, you can he is not that high quality guy which I will accept because I have no way to validate it.
Your heart is in right place. You will be a good partner one day

At the very least- do remember this issue going forward and you are in an opportunity to lead. It’s SO MUCH better to lead through positivity and inspiration
I have shared with a PPMD that morale was low and that the team could stand to benefit from some positive strokes and it didn’t go over so well. I’d just say know your PPMD. You also could encourage people fill out LOOP.
Not sure about that. Decent people have always been decent.

Do you ever thank the partner for selling the work in the first place?
Chief
Y’all bitter af just talking about a simple “thank you for closing this one out with your team”
That’s your job as a PM, yep. Thoughtful of you to notice your team could benefit from that.
Chief
Thanks for the insight
Nah it wouldn’t be rude but that’s just how some leaders are, if you don’t think they’ll be receptive to it then don’t bother
Chief
I feel like I owe it to my team who works really hard to try and get them some recognition. I thank them all the time but I’m not a partner
I’ve been in this situation. The PMD was just a challenge and beat the shit out of the team’s morale because he was super direct and asked rhetorical questions in a way that suggested the team’s a bunch of idiots (why in the would would we ever do that?!??) We chatted and he tried to give the team support and meant well, but it backfired because the way he tried to encourage them just made them feel inadequate. Utter and complete train wreck.
I’ve went around it by getting the team recognition in other ways. Call out on account meetings, quick visit from LCP or LCSP, virtual celebration allowing them to buy dinner, PMD-free teambuilding exercises when we are collocated. It was not the best scenario, but it worked. The team appreciates your effort and knows you appreciate them.
You are awesome, OP! We need more people like you at Deloitte and in our world.
Make the suggestion of saying what's going well with the project during the status calls. This would be something to tell the PM instead of the partner though. The partner cares about the happiness of the customer and the $$. To get the partner's attention, get kudos in writing from a customer or find a way to save money on the project.

If I get in trouble for suggesting he be more encouraging of our team, that’s fine by me. I want my team to feel encouraged and empowered
Pro
You could certainly bring it up, they might not realize how they’re coming off because they’re focused on the tasks at hand.
Chief
That’s totally understandable. I get like that too.
Go for it....just make sure you word it in a manner whereby you say that positive feedback could help the team deliver even better.
If they are not an a-hole they should take it well
Chief
Yeah i will word it that way. I’m diplomatic
not rude just suggest it would be great if leadership could put a positive spin in their own words to the team
I’ll email senior folks on my team with a “thank you request” for when a junior person has a big win.
Chief
Good idea
Yes a good job can be good for the moral, but you shouldn’t expect it from anyone, or else you’ll be very disappointed in life.
Respectfully, I appreciate your positive attitude but partners don’t care about their teams most of the time, they care about the client and growing their book of business. Consultants get paid more than industry because our work environment is often inhospitable
Hazard pay is a thing for sure.
