I just finished an extensive interview process (4 rounds + CEO meeting) and HR revealed the salary ceiling is $10K below my current pay. I disclosed my salary early on, so this feels like poor planning on their end. I'd take a lateral move but not a step back. Could this be a negotiation ploy? HR is expecting my counteroffer soon.

You disclosed what?!
Why?
You lost your leverage
Why not put a range and add at least 10-20% higher than your current salary

likesmart

You respond back that you need more than that to give up your current role - 10% on top of what you earn currently

They interviewed you for four rounds and extended you a pay package that means they want you. You have to stand on what you want, even if you have to remain where you are. Stand up to them now they are showing you who and how they work. Show them how you play.

They can offer below but I would negotiate up. I think the only ploy is that the company is trying to get the biggest bang for their buck.

This is exactly why you don't disclose salary. And if you have no choice, why you should always add a disclaimer that you need your current salary +X% to justify the move. Counterback to a number above what you're willing to accept and if they won't budge, move on.

Did the job posting have a salary range listed? I can't remember the last time a recruiter (or anyone else) asked what my current salary, but have been asked what my current salary expectations are, and the range I give them is around 10-15% higher than what I am making now, depending on what the role is.

Instead of giving them your current salary, I would have told them what my salary expectations are. You can counter with something that is more in the range of what you are looking for.

I'm holding an offer from MakeMyTrip and another offer from OlaElectric. Ninjacart is willing to make me an offer. But they're saying that they'd discuss the offer only after the other company that I'm interviewing with has come up with an offer first. There's been a delay from HRs of the companies in a similar way. How do I urge them to send me the offer letter without sounding pushy? I had reached out to some of the HRs myself. Would that be too awkward if I accept & back out their offer?

I understand they deduct tax, but I feel it is too much. IDK where I'm losing the money. Can someone tell if this is normal. I'm a fresher so, IDK much about it.

Also, what can I do to pay less taxes? Any help on that?

Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations

I’ve been verbally offered a position at a new company, but the recruiter insists on getting a verbal acceptance before sending the offer in writing. This person insists on negotiating salary before sending the paperwork. Generic benefits, RSUs, bonus info have been provided; it’s all unofficial.

This is absurd. Am I missing some “new way” of doing things? Your take?

I’ve been approached my by company that one of our large clients (who im currently project managing for) is looking for a consultant of sorts, and if they hire us, I’d be the first person asked to take on this consultant role. This isn’t something my company typically offers and would greatly change the scope of my role. Has anyone ever taken on a role like this? If so, were you able to negotiate a percentage of the consulting fee? Or was it a bump in salary during the project?

What are tips for salary negotiations? I'm fairly new to my registered representative role so I'm not sure if that'll impact my ability to negotiate? Any insights or tips will be greatly appreciated.

I’m interviewing with a startup and the range has a 40k difference from the lowest to highest point. It’s also pre-seed and comes with equity, and health, 401k benefits. It’s a director of sales role so I would eventually be recruiting and managing a team along with building the processes and strategy. What would you consider a fair compensation package? If they offer me something on the lower end of the range, is it still appropriate to counter with an offer that is over their stated range?

I’m interviewing for a marketing manager role at a company based in SF. I’m genuinely excited about the role and the company but we’ve yet to discuss salary. I expect to be asked at some point, but my research has given me a VERY broad range. So I’m here to do a bit more research. I’ve got 5 very relevant years of experience and will have an associate manager directly reporting to me. Are there any marketers out there who can share their salaries in similar regions and experience levels?

Interviewing at a dream company, and right from the first interview the recruiter told me we are way off on salary expectations. This was a little bit expected, as the role is requiring a few years less experience than I have and also in a much cheaper market. They already told me the salary range during this first call, but wondering if they like me enough and I get an offer, how I might approach negotiating for more. I would be making much less than I do now, but it is a dream company.

I was approached on LinkedIn for an early career recruiting role in DFW, TX. I don't have direct experience, but I have the university experience/connections from working in career services. This is the first time I've considered work outside of higher education. I said my salary expectations are minimum $90k and that didn't seem to be an issue. Am I asking too little, too much? How can I know I'm getting the best salary and not just settling at the low end of the range?

I anticipate getting a promotion this year and would like to get closer to $60k for my base salary. I’m the only person in my role at the company and have been a key person in developing our team as we look to expand. Is this unreasonable? Is there a normal increase given with promotions? My husband just received a job offer on an opportunity he is really excited about. It would be great for his career and they are giving the 15% jump in base he asked for, however they won’t share what the target bonus amount would be. It’s an executive director position, so I would assume it’s a decent target bonus, but without that in writing it could honestly be a gift basket at the end of the year. Is it a red flag for them to not share this? His total comp could be less at this new job…

When I negotiated my comp, all my discussions were around me being a junior and I only accepted my comp for that reason (would not have accepted if I was step above junior since it was low).
