I just got an offer for a job I really want, but the recruiter said the salary is final and they can’t negotiate. I was really hoping to ask for a little more since I have a lot of experience. Has anyone tried pushing back after being told that and actually gotten more? Or is it a waste of effort once they say the offer is non-negotiable?

If they say nonnegotiable, unfortunately it is. I would explain that I was hoping for an increase due to your experience, but then I would ask if there is a 3 month evaluation for a pay increase. Or when would a pay increase occur.

like

I would Take the job if it is a position you really want it. Money helps but happiness is important as well. Once you’re there for 3 months, ask for a market adjustment analysis but do your research first. Type it up and quote the other job postings you see. Continue applying for other jobs as well because if you receive an offer, your job may match it.

like

It depends. I would ask about the market rate their basing the salary on and if this is the starting bandwidth to include frequency of merit increases.

The other recommendation is to decline the offer and continue to look for a position with a more suitable salary range.

Either way, it's your decision, but please don'tchoose out of desperation, fear, or scarcity, and ensure you have a contingency for either path.

Best of luck 🎲

If they say it is non negotiable, then it’s non negotiable. If they flip to negotiate again, then I would be very suspicious of their corporate culture. Only way to negotiate from now on is to see if you qualify for a higher level position and get into a higher comp band.

I asked for a higher salary and they said it's non-negotiable and they didn't budge at all. So I didn't take the position. Know your self worth!

I will say there is an exception to this. Sometimes companies will negotiate benefits or fringe benefits. Sometimes benefits, if they are good, can save you a lot of money elsewhere in your day to day life that can be more valuable than the increase in pay. Such as of course medical, dental and vision; they will pay for childcare, company car, etc.

The company I applied at did not offer any benefits so unfortunately I had nothing to negotiate or justify taking a lower salary.

like

that can be tricky, because alot of times the one calling you have not seen the job post. For example, last week I was interviewing for a job and they hesitated after when they asked for my salary request. I had given them $60k, because there job post also supported range (ex. $48k-$70k)
After they reviewed the job post, they had to give me a callback, because they needed to confirm what was posted. 😳🤯

If you're going through a 3rd party recruiter, I'd be a little weary. If it was directly through the company, it would be more believable. In either case, if the offer doesn't satisfy your needs, be honest about it.

like

If salary isn’t negotiable, maybe other benefits are? ask for an extra week or two vacation perhaps?

likehelpful

If they say they can't negotiate, then you probably won't any more than that. You can ask if you can get a performance review either at3 or 6 months into the role, and see if you can get a pay increase at that point. But that is no guarantee you will get anything more than what you were offered until your annual merit raise time.

It would help if you document what you accomplished each week, month and quarter. So when you have your 1:1 with your manager, you can bring up your achievements. That could help you to get a better pay raise.

like

Probably can’t get anymore, how much more do you want? Perhaps you can negotiate something else instead?

Hi All! Looking for some advice. I am a manager a country club but I do everything. I’m in charge of outside events and member events, in charge of the front of house staff, scheduling, ordering and membership sales for the club. I feel I am very underpaid at $45k. I do get commission but it’s very low ($10k give or take for the year). I work 6/7 days a week sometimes 10+ hrs/day. I’ve been researching salaries to be able to negotiate higher pay. I want to ask for $60k-is this reasonable?

Cash bonuses, raises, profit-sharing, company equity, 401k match, etc.
