Hi fishes,
I am planning a switch so was going through some salary data for a software engineer. My ex-senior manager recommended me a website: Growceed.com which helped me a lot in getting clarification about a lot of things but I am in doubt whether the average salaries of software engineer mentioned on Growceed.com really that much in top MNC companies.

TBH this is the case pretty much everywhere maybe even moreso in industry it’s just not as obvious because they don’t say “hey you’re in charging now”
In order to get promoted you have to make a case to your manager and the best way to do that is perform above your level
Wisdom comes from experience. Thinking it's different elsewhere is just buying into internet memes or some ransoms internet claims.
Wow. As a former staff 2 that acted as a senior, and a senior 2 that acted as a manager, I was always great-full for the opportunities to go above and beyond. I was also always well compensated and always significantly outperformed peers which helped in annual salary increase. I prefer to be looked at as someone who does more than peer group. I realize the firm needed it but when I look at my peer group now, I’m doing a lot better because of those roles.
Yes exactly I ended up working more than my peers because of lack of staffing on multiples engagements and been doing a great job. I took PTO and feel much better now :)

Uhh…it literally works that way in every job. Over time you get more responsibility. They don’t first promote you and then overnight give you responsibility. Is this your first job?
Ooof EY2 and EY3, pretty rude? I just believe in fair compensation for your responsibilities. Glad you guys are volunteers at this firm

“Acting” seniors also don’t have to live up to the same standards.

Again. Being acting manager is not the same as being manager. Bar is so much lower. For expectation of both tasks assigned and the performance. Moat acting managers would be rated very low/PIP if they were to be evaluated as actual managers. Bc they don't know how to do the job yet and are learning. Thats what acting means
Pro
And to add...when your manager tells you you are going to be acting senior, they are really telling you they'll teach you how to be a senior. Only bc you don't have an actual senior on your team doesn't mean you are fully performing that role. More often than not its your manager stepping down and meeting you half way.

Its part of our job. Thats literally how PA works. Apprenticeship model. Its not doing anything extra.
Oh you sweet, sweet child... welcome to the real world.
You need to show you can take on the next level responsibilities before you get promoted. It's the same everywhere.
I understand that you get more responsibilities as you advance, but I think the issue is when you’re “acting senior” and they charge you out to clients as a senior. So then the firm is treating you as a senior, the client is paying for you as a senior, but the firm is just pocketing the extra money they’re billing you at
Rising Star
That’s not how it usually works with billing. We’re either fixed fee or charge you out at the rate your bill rate hits WIP. Not saying some don’t do differently but that’s not my experience.
EY, I guess we’re fortunate that you slipped through our recruiting at PwC. You get those because you’ve earned them and we can better evaluate how you’ll perform at the next level on day 1. For the KPMGer in the crowd, we don’t adjust billing rates in the system for this and I doubt your firm does either. But keep thinking it and how the firm just continues to take advantage of you. You should go far with that attitude. It’s discouraging to see some of these posts to be honest. The clients we get to work on for B4 are the cream of the crop. You get to learn and train working with the best and brightest people anywhere to either advance within the company or exit out at great positions in industry. It’s a marathon not a sprint. Enjoy the ride, work your ass off no matter what and learn. It will set you up for life.
I think it’s the best and brightest that stick around. But it’s really a combo. Some see through the noise and make it work.

Let's say I give you a comp adjustment because I need you to act as a manager on an engagement. Do I get to claw it back if you don't perform at the manager level on it?
Yes, yes you do lol. When responsibilities/job description changes radically one way or the other. Could just have a conversation about a 1 off engagement bonus for acting in a higher role or be up front about future compensation if you won't be acting manager the rest of the year. Is that really far fetched?
I prefer the sink or swim method.
Acting senior /mgr/Sr mgr/anything is the best learning opportunity you can get. You get all the upside in terms of learning and trying on the next role up without the downside of higher expectations. It is the absolute best time to enjoy your team investing in your on the job development.
Rising Star
I mean I agree with that last point. But the issue isn’t the promotion model which you are describing. The issue is understaffing engagements amid increasing regulatory requirements and decreased fees. Something definitely should change
Imagine getting paid as a rookie in the NBA but acting as the franchise star/player of the team as there are limits to how much you can get paid the first contract after being drafted.. then cashing in on everything you did and prices you can do afterwards. Damn NBA teams, picketing extra money from ticket sales and merch sales.
I guess you're still pretty new to the business. Hope you learn and understand quick before you burn out
Same thing with “lead senior” - like what does this mean? You have to do engagement and project management too? Lol
It means you should be taking the lead. Talk to manager
Backup quarterback.
A lot of companies do do that though
First you do the job then you get promoted into the job.
