I am in the exact same boat. Just realizing I’ve been pushing myself to succeed in this industry, so much so, that I forgot that this is not my true self. I am introvert and I’ve been pretending to be someone else. Please don’t blame yourself for anything, this industry is TOUGH and it breaks people. Also the depression is probably a symptom of burnout. You have what it takes, it just takes too much. We’ll get through this!

One factor that contributes with me feeling down, is that I literally grew old doing the same thing for years. No real growth. I recently took a job with an agency I like, but I am by far the oldest art director in the group. I am “competing” with younger folks who have more energy and stamina. Most of them don’t have kids, so basically all their time is devoted to work. They are effective and focused. It’s not an easy position to be in. At all.

Think about what else you would be willing to learn or what makes u happy… and go from there
Take care of your mental health, first and foremost. Then consider looking for a purpose-based agency that aligns with your values. It’s easier to build motivation when you work for a company that is doing something for the world (or at least wants to.) Depression isn’t something that gets fixed, but there are treatment options out there to try. Good luck.
I was in a very similar situation as the one you’ve described. With therapy, medication, and social support I’ve gotten through it. I took a less stressful job for a couple of years until I got to a place where I could feel good about going back to what I intended to do. I found a company that values employee wellness and has a team that is full of genuinely good people. It may not feel like it, but there are many paths you can take to start feeling better.
