I thought I was dead set on getting a remote job but discovering those are hard to come by. I found something I like but would have to be in office once a week and will be 3-4 days eventually. If the pay is a 15% bump plus 15% bonus, plus carry after a year (it’s a VC) would I be stupid to not take it just because of the in office requirement? I’ve really become accustomed to remote life and don’t want to go back in person, but the money is making me wonder if I’m being stupid with that thinking

How much is the carry?

Might be worth to try the new job for one yr and see. Public is easy to come back too

Might be the accountant in me but I would approach this by looking at some numbers. I’d estimate your expenses for the year - wear and tear on the car, gas, lunch, whatever else going to work in person will cost you. And reduce the bump by that amount to maybe get a more realistic perspective on it

Been asked by a client to apply for a GS14 term position but I have a few questions/concerns.
1. Current salary is 140K with ~10K variable comp. If I wanted to at least match, it would require me to be in Step 5/6— is that possible/likely or would I have to start at Step 1?
2. How often have you seen term positions converted to permanent? I’m considering turning this offer down due to this.

Is there a definitive guide to cost of living? The obvious cost of living centers (SF, NYC, LA etc.) get covered a lot, but I’m wondering where my city falls. It’s a modest Midwest city with ~100k residents but is a relatively touristy spot. It often feels like a MCOL area but I’m not sure how to adequately judge that, and it would be helpful to know when comparing salaries and the like.
