The first year your kid is in school/daycare, no matter the age, they (and you) will get sick frequently. Set up a good system with your spouse and understand your in-office requirements with your employers so you know what to do when your 2 yo wakes up with a 102 fever.
Just get used to this…In all seriousness, have it worked out with your employer in advance about the flexibility to pivot when your child is sick.
For the first two years things are going to be crazy. That's just the reality of working in law and having an under two. Try as hard as you can not to rag on yourself if you aren't at the standard you used to be, this is a huge life adjustment and will require time to transition. It's going to be difficult, but it doesn't have to feel hard all the time if you have a firm and SO who are willing to work with you. Is your wife in law as well?
No one really cares about your parent duties. You will have to work extra hard to make sure you are giving due attention and time to family while simultaneously you are always available for work, and getting work done flawlessly and on time or ahead of time. You will have to stand out just to fit in. Being a new parent inevitably means less sleep, but being a parent in law means no sleep.
This could just be my firm and I certainly hope so. I thought it was just my team because I’m the only one with young children, but I spoke to a “mentor” outside my team who unsympathetically told me the above.
It's hard, but it is so awesome. Congratulations!
